Gold Award for Molly!

Little did Molly Hoffman know when she joined the Daisy Girl Scouts in kindergarten that she’d eventually earn the highest honor the Girl Scouts offered – the Gold Award. But that’s exactly what this Bethel Park senior has accomplished. She constructed a vernal pool for amphibians in South Park last summer. A vernal pool is a seasonal body of water that creates a habitat for frogs and other amphibians. With the encouragement and support of the Allegheny County Park Rangers and the Allegheny County Parks Foundation , among other organizations, Molly completed the work and is hoping to see frogs populating it this spring.   Read the whole story.

Project update

The Allegheny County Parks Foundation , in partnership with Allegheny County , has constructed four livestock shelters at Round Hill Park to protect the animals from hot sun and inclement weather. Two shelters were built for sheep, one for cows and one for horses. They’ve been placed in the park’s pastures. The Parks Foundation secured funding from the Peaceable Kingdom Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation and it was matched by Allegheny County.  Round Hill Park in Elizabeth features a demonstration farm with cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits and other livestock. Other amenities include soccer fields, shelters, a spray park, walking and bridle trails and a duck pond.

Upcoming community event

Mark your calendars for the annual Garden and Landscape Symposium to benefit the Penn State Master Gardeners of Allegheny County. Landscape professionals and home gardeners will benefit from this one-day educational horticulture event. Best-selling author Ken Druse will speak about how to create a lush shade garden in an era of climate change. Registration is required for the lectures. Free admission is extended to all visitors of the Marketplace, which features a wide variety of local vendors featuring plants, gardening tools and gifts.
