100 Runs in 100 Days: Is it Smart?

There's a running challenge that involves doing 100 runs in 100 days. It sounds impressive, and for sure if you could survive it unscathed your running would likely stand up to a new level. And best of all your logbook would be fat and happy with that unbroken string of entries in the running column. But if you're real goal is to become a better runner, is this going to be the secret? Probably not!

Consistency is essential for taking your running to a higher plain. But if your body is not ready for that much running, the consistency part will fall apart with a plague of common injuries- Achilles and IT band tendonitis, knee pain, hip pain, stress fractures to name a few. Who cares if you get to run #98 if the 99th pushes you past the point of no return and you spent the next 100 days limping through a handful of frustratingly slow jogs trying to run through the pain of an overuse injury? Instead of a run challenge that could spell disaster why not put one together that is nearly certain to bring success? [ Read more....]

I saw that you posted the "Belief" article that had originally been published in the Dec/14 Lava magazine ( see article here ). I thought I would share with you how much that article has meant to me. During 2014 I was training for my first IRONMAN and I felt very nervous. I was worried about the swim, and I spent the entire year working with a coach to improve my swim. My swim coach assured me before my race that my swim was great, and she was not worried about making that swim cut off.

I reread this article all the time, and in particular one particular passage: "It's knowing in every cell of your body that you are willing to lock in, engage and commit regardless of how clearly you see your dreams or how out of reach they may appear in the toughest part of the journey. Real belief will take that risk anyway because you grasp how stupendous it is to give it your all, and that even if you come up short, your life will be better for having tried".
I specifically reread it the night before my race, having my brother fetch the magazine the day before the race for me as I had forgotten it at home. The next morning....

10-year PR, CAF Fundraising, and a GREAT time! 

"I had two goals for the race. One was to go faster than I've gone in the last 10 years (5:24 best) and possibly beat my PR of 5:18 when I raced in the 40-44. The other goal was to make the race more meaningful by helping raise awareness and some money for the Challenged Athletes foundation.  16 weeks on the peak performance program was the plan for the race. Lots of chasing friends for CAF was the plan there. To keep this short, I went 5:23:54 and finished 7th in the 55-59 age group. Best time in over 10 years and best finish ever at a very competitive race! I also raised $4300 and finished 4th in the CAF challenge. In both cases, I exceeded my goals but more importantly had an absolutely great time!"

This super quick and easy to make flat bread pizza can be eat 3 different ways. It can be rolled into a Gyro, baked in the oven just like a pizza or eat it as a delicious salad. Its up to you. Tri it, you'll love it!

I ngredients:
  • Flat bread
  • Diced grilled chicken breast or pulled rotisserie check breast
  • Cherry tomatoes (sliced in half)
  • Fresh spinach (chopped)
  • Tomato sauce (your favorite)
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Mozzarella cheese (shredded)
  1. Lay flat bread out.
  2. 1 table spoon tomato sauce
  3. Assemble chicken, tomatoes, spinach on the sauced flat bread
  4. Sprinkle on parmesan and mozzarella cheese on top
How to eat:
  • As a salad, simply place on a plate and enjoy
  • As a gyro, slowly roll from the longest side on to the other and fold in half & enjoy.
  • As a pizza, pre heat oven to 425 degrees and back until cheese is golden brown and enjoy

Meet the Iron Chef: Leo Di Canio  grew up in a home where food was a passion. Years later, Leo would apprentice for 3 years in Italy where cooking Italian food became his specialty. He then went on to college where he received a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management, and then went on to graduate at the top of his class at the School of Culinary Arts in Atlanta Ga. In early 2010, he began running 5Ks and by December of that year completed his first Marathon in Las Vegas. That year he also completed his first sprint triathlon. 

In 2012, he teamed up with Mark Allen and began a journey to race every distance in triathlon including IRONMAN. He released a book about his journey to becoming an Ironman titled, "I Will Be Iron" at . His passions are his family, triathlon and to create delicious meals that are both nutritious and simple. Being a triathlete and member of the MarkAllenCoaching Elite team, Leo knows that triathletes are some of the busiest people around. His goal will be to create great meals that are full of flavor and nutrition, but easy to cook for yourself and your family.
