Market Hall Performing Arts Centre is proud to continue its Bright Lights Series on October 16th.  The "bright lights" of this series are exceptionally talented local performing artists, often known internationally. Each event in the series features the life and work of one artist through conversation, anecdotes, stories and performance.

On October 16, the audience will have the pleasure of learning about and honouring Syd Birrell.  Syd is the well-known conductor of the Peterborough Singers, a choir recognized far beyond Canada. However, Syd's life is a coat of many colours. Though born in Sarnia, he has a most interesting British background that accounts for his expertise in building and engineering. Some know him as a master organist; others, know him as a compassionate counselor and motivational speaker. Of course, many know him as founder, fundraiser and advocate of The James Fund which supports ground-breaking research to find a cure for neuroblastoma, a devastating child cancer.

Find out more about Syd Birrell, entrepreneur, community builder, artist, explorer, author, and lover of life.  Come to "An Evening with Syd Birrell" at Market Hall on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are available at Market Hall for $22. Call 749-1146, Monday to Friday, 12 to 5 pm.

The Market Hall has an elevator and thus is fully accessible for patrons and Artists. The Historic hall is also equipped with a hearing assist program.

Emilie-Claire Barlow, our Canadian vocal-jazz jewel is ready to hit the road to present her recently released french album titled "Seule ce Soir". The album charmed francophone and Anglophone audiences alike, and took home the Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year at this year's Juno Awards. What started as a simple french compilation turned into a fully fledged french album that includes all the francophone songs Emilie-Claire Barlow had recorded on her previous albums, re-arranged and re-recorded, plus six brand new songs

Accompanied by a stellar band comprised of Canada's top jazz musicians, Emilie-Clairre Barlow performs repertoire from "Seule ce soir", as well as her previous discs, including "The Beat Goes On", inspired by popular music of the 60's, reinvented in Barlow's charming style.

From Montreal to Tokyo, France's Cote d'Azure to her home town of Toronto, Emilie-Claire continues to endear herself to critics, peers, and audiences everywhere, with her relaxed, polished demeanour, her charming humour, and a voice of unforgettable beauty.
