Welcome to your Market News!

Holiday lights glimmer on the towering trunks of palm trees. The windows of craftsman houses shine with candles these early-dusk evenings. The stores are full of candy canes and chocolate coins that never taste as good as we remember from childhood, but that still make us smile (especially because we know we can get much tastier treats from local sweets crafters!). We wander through the farmers markets marveling at festively bright persimmons, pomegranates, and citrus on chilly mornings or cloudy afternoons in our neighborhoods.

It is December and most likely you are in the midst of the holiday chaos of work parties, decorating the house (office, car, farm, etc), and crafting and acquiring gifts for friends and family. Need some help on all of those fronts?

Here's a little list of holiday ideas that can not only raise the spirits but help support local artisans and farmers, too!

1. Give party-goers a lighter option: instead of another plate of sugar cookies or pigs in a blanket, bring a basket of local fruit to a holiday party or potluck (or give as a hostess gift). Collect oranges, persimmons, pears, and late apples from your local fruit farmers' booths and pile into a basket or ceramic bowl. Or bring a plate of cut-up fruit with some caramel or cinnamon swirled yogurt in which to dip those tasty bites.

2. Give friends and family a San Diego sampler: locally harvested almonds, small batch jams, flavored olive oils, spicy kimchi, fresh citrus and pomegranates, a loaf of spiced bread... Shop around for the ingredients of a care package that will not only delight the recipient but also support local businesses. How about getting even more specific with a theme like Pasta Night by giving a stock pot or ceramic bowl filled with gluten free spinach pasta, California olive oil, herbed sea salt, fresh or dried mushrooms, and heirloom tomatoes? Or a Breakfast in Bed theme with a tray full of organic tea, farm fresh eggs, a medley of veggies, white chocolate nut butter, and locally made jam?

3. Get crafty in the kitchen: Make up a big batch of Meyer lemon marmalade, spicy tomato salsa, or apple butter to give as gifts. Make them shelf stable by canning. Or put the concoctions in clean jars and tell the recipient to refrigerate and eat as soon as possible (which probably won't be a problem as the result will be amazingly delicious!).

4. Sign your nearest and dearest up for a Farmers Market CSA: What better way to treat friends and family to the joys of healthy eating than by giving them a weekly dose of veggies, fruits, eggs, honey and/or whatever else one may find in the bucket! See the website for details.

5. If you are a chef type, why not give an IOU gift of a special dinner or picnic with all locally grown foods you harvest from the farmers' market? How could you celebrate a dear friend more festively than by making time (and food!) for them?

6. Bake a loaf of bread or cupcakes with local fruits and veggies: Some great recipes include Chocolate Beet Cake (delicious in loaf form!), Chocolate Kale Cake, or Pumpkin Pomegranate Bread (see recipe below).

7. Decorate your house with bowls of fruit, bouquets of leafy greens (try chard and kale with feathery sprigs of fennel in a mason jar), hearty succulents in festive pots, and fresh cut flowers from the farmers' market.

8. Bring a friend to the farmers' market for a holiday spree! Buy them a beautiful Ghanian basket at the Manager's Booth, tell your friend to fill it up with veggies and fruits and you'll pay the tab (or up to a certain amount)!

Happy holidays from everyone at Brian's Farmers' Markets!

Holiday Haiku

Cloaked in crimson glee,
the pomegranate unfolds.
A market of jewels.

Slow, aroma-soaked
and finely cooked tender greens.
Quiet tastes better.

Collared in late night
cloud, a cold winter fog plays.
Steam from my jade cup.

The Mighty Pomegranate

If you have yet to delve into the sweet delight of this gorgeous fruit, then you better take advantage before the season ends in January! Pomegranates are one of the most powerful anti-oxidant fruits around. They contain high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols, which offer protection against cancer and heart disease. If you dare to believe, they even offer more antioxidants than green tea, blueberries, red wine and cranberries. Can I get a "wow" from the pomegranate lovers?!

Some people do not take advantage of these amazing benefits because you have to crack open the fruit and remove the ohhhh so gorgeous and delicious jewels inside. Breaking these bright red jewels free from the inside is beyond worth it! Also known as "arils", these sweet nutritious beauties contain punicalagins, which help to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Additionally, they can help reduce inflammation in the body, giving your tissues a sense of comfort and relief.Within these arils lie the pungent juice and a small white crunchy seed. Many will eat the whole aril, which will give you an added boost of fiber. Some slurp the juice and spit out the seed; its up to you!

When choosing a pomegranate, look for a firm and taught outer skin as well as a heavy weight. When the weight is heavy, it means the arils are filled to the brim with yummy juice. Pomegranates will keep well at room temperature if they are kept away from direct sunlight. If you decide to remove all red jewels upon opening, they will keep well for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

Pomegranates are a great addition to salad, greek yogurt and an unusual addition to baked goods (see recipe below)..... Enjoy!

Recipe of the Month

Apple Pomegranate Spice Bread

ingredients
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 generous pinch fresh ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) melted unsalted butter
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup finely diced apples
  • 1 cup pomegranate arils
directions
  •  1. Mix all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Stamp the mixture with a whisk to break apart any brown sugar clumps.
  •  2. Melt the butter by placing it in a microwave-safe ramekin and microwaving it for about 30-40 seconds. Mix the melted butter with the applesauce to cool it down. Beat the eggs and milk together. Beat the applesauce/butter mixture into the egg/milk mixture.
  •  3. Make a well in the dry ingredients. Pour the wet mixture, the chopped apples and the pomegranate arils into the dry ingredients and stir until just blended. Once all of the dry ingredients are wet, stop mixing, even if there are a few clumps left. If you overmix the dough, the bread will come out tough.
  •  4. Pour the mixture into two 9x5 bread tins that have either been greased with butter or sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 350˚F for 50 minutes or until edges are lightly browned and bread is springy to the touch.
  • 5. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.
