Market Trends from G2E Asia, Singapore

On the heels of G2E Asia’s special edition conference last week in Singapore, The Innovation Group’s Michael Soll and Michael Zhu compiled their thoughts on key market trends from dialogue across the three-day event. Contact Soll and Zhu through the links below to discuss these and other opportunities in the Asian markets.

  • Strong momentum in The Philippines market to continue. The Philippine gaming market has become the indisputable leader of the post-pandemic era. Fueled by robust local segments and accelerating international visitation, Q1 Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) this year was reported at 113% of the pre-COVID level. With more casino resorts coming online, this momentum shows no signs of slowing, although there is some concern regarding potential oversupply.

  • Recovery officially in full swing in Singapore and Macau. GGR in Singapore has nearly reached its pre-pandemic level and is poised to exceed it in the near future. And, despite its GGR clocking in at only 52% of pre-COVID levels, recovery in Macau has been accelerating since February – settling in to a much-anticipated upward trajectory.

  • Limiting growth in South Korea and Vietnam. Although aligned with the uptrend, South Korea and Vietnam continue to face restrictions on local play, and rely on international visitation, limiting the upside for new resorts planned in the region.

  • A tale of two trajectories in Thailand and Japan. Thailand’s gaming committee is focused and seemingly unified, while representatives from Japan gave no confidence in a more straightforward path going forward.

  • Fuzzy outlook for online play in Asia. As the focus continues to be on land-based operations in this region, online and sports wagering trends seen stateside are not as distinct in Asia. The likelihood of parity between bricks-and-mortar and online operators is low, in contrast to the North American tendency to bundle these operations.

  • Esports advancing as an amenity. Esports is developing in terms of organizing leadership and accessing clean data. Nevertheless, it is so far trending as more of an attractive amenity than a potential source of sports betting revenue.
