How to Diagnose a Profit Decrease

We’re heading into Q4, and that means it’s time to pause and take stock of the past few months—before steeling ourselves for an inevitable crescendo toward the holidays and the end of the calendar year. If your assessment reveals a drop-off in any of your business operations, no matter how slight, you’re certainly going to be wondering why—and how it can be quickly corrected.

The first step is always diagnosing the issue, and that means looking at your sales funnel. But once you know which step might contain the problem, does that actually mean the problem can be fixed with sales strategies? Or is it going to rely on your marketing team? This is one of those eternal questions with many possible answers, and it changes based on the company and the scenario.

But we’ve put together a basic outline that can get you started.

Here’s what to look for at every stage, as well as what your solutions are going to entail:

1. Lead Generation: If your marketing campaigns aren’t generating sufficient leads, that means you’ll need to review your lead generation metrics and campaign effectiveness.

2. Lead Conversion: If leads are high but conversions are low, the issue likely comes down to sales strategy. Evaluate your sales process and conversion rates. Be sure to take into account if there is a pattern that accounts for temporary peaks and valleys, and rule out whether you’re just in an expected low period.

3. Survey Customers: Gather feedback from recent prospects and customers. Find out whether they’re unaware of your brand and offerings, or whether they do know about you but haven’t seen incentives to convert into customers (such as offers and outreach). This might be a joint venture that relies on both sales and marketing initiatives to solve.

4. Competitive Analysis: Compare your strategies against those of your competitors. If they’re outperforming you in terms of raising awareness and attracting new audiences, refine your marketing. If they share a similar lead pool but seem to be closing more deals, revisit your sales tactics.

By pinpointing where the drop-off occurs, you can effectively address and rectify the problem.

And if your troubleshooting happens to point toward a scenario that a swift and strategic correction in marketing tactics might solve, then Mad 4 Marketing is happy to help get you back on track for an improved Q4.
