Seattle Sutton and her family have offered to sell the Seattle Sutton Marseilles Museum to the City. They have offered to sell the building to the city for 42k. The building was appraised for 170k and the family invested 150k in fixing up the building, installing pigeon barriers, blacktopping the parking lot, installing an electronic sign etc.
The contents of the building containing Marseilles history and memorabilia will be given to the city at no charge. The Sutton family has been generous enough to still offer all the contents to the city for free even if we don’t purchase the building. We would just have to find some place to put on display.
The museum would continue to be run by the board consisting of 7 people and a director. Three people would be appointed by the mayor with council approval and three would be appointed by the Sutton family. The director would be mutually agreed on by both parties. This offer is still fluid as nothing has been finalized or voted on. Everything is still in discussion at this time. There may be changes before the contract is placed on file for review.
The Sutton family has been very good at supporting the City and its organizations for decades and we have always appreciated everything they have done for us. A couple of things that come to mind are their financial support for the Marseilles Nursing Service and our Community Swimming Pool. We are sure there are many more examples of their love for our community. If there is a need, Seattle is there. We certainly appreciate them offering this to the City and their concern for preserving the history of Marseilles.
Good weather has allowed construction to continue without interruption at Broadway Park. The basketball court and pickle ball court have been installed as well as the walking trail!
The street resurfacing program is completed and finishing touches are being made with the landscaping and handicap accessible crosswalks.
We want to give a shout out to the Fall Fest Committee for once again putting forth a very nice Fall Fest. Lesley Hart, Terri Crum, Cheryl Gray, Michelle Gordon, and Brian Trainor. A big thank you to our Public Works Employees for all their help as well. The Marseilles Firefighters Association as well for the fire truck rides, open house, and fire safety trailer.
Donations for the hurricane victims can be left at City Hall for pickup by John Hamilton who is going to personally make a trip to the east coast to deliver. A list of acceptable items can be found on the City's Facebook Page here:
