Thoughts and Prayers
Please remember Diane Paton and family as she recovers from surgery;    the father of Tracey Klingbeil and  the sick and the shut ins as this can be a lonely time of year.

Inclement Weather
It's that time of year when the weather can be a little tricky.  If the weather makes it unsafe for worship, an email will be sent out first thing Sunday morning to those registered to receive the Newsletter.  A cancellation notice will also be posted to our website at mmuc.org.

65th Annual General Meeting
All members and adherents are invited to attend the 65th Annual General Meeting of the Marshall Memorial congregation, which will be held on Sunday February 3rd in the Fellowship Hall. Coffee and pastries will be available from 9:30 to 10:00, followed by a combined worship service and annual meeting to review the annual report for 2018 and conduct the business of the congregation, including approving the slate of officers, financial statements for 2018, and the proposed budget for 2019.  The 2018 Annual Report will be available online at mmuc.org under the "Members" section.

Moving Forward With Our Vision and Mission
An invitation to all members and friends of Marshall:
The Marshall Board members invite all interested members and friends of the congregation to join us in a focus session which will be held Saturday January 26th in the Gathering Place from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. The session will be led by Rev. Pegi Ridout. She will be presenting the module "Planning and Executing Effective Ministry", from United Fresh Start, a programme of the United Church. This module is designed to assist congregations who have worked on their vision and mission, and now, at the beginning of a new ministry, wish to prepare an action plan to move forward in executing the mission. Please contact Charlotte Stewart (stewchar01@gmail.com) by Friday Jan. 25 noon if you plan to attend.

The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others
On Wednesdays, there is a DVD study of the book The Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others (10th Anniversary Edition) by Scot McKnight. We will meet each Wednesday in the Gathering Place, from 1:30 - 3:00.

This book contends that spiritual formation for Jesus is centered on the Shema - an affirmation recited morning and night by all devout Jews, found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5 - "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength" - coupled with this command from Leviticus 19:18 - "Love your neighbour as yourself." By linking these two commands together as the greatest of all the commandments of Judaism, Jesus affirms that love of God must be lived out in the world as love of others. This study will help us examine our own spiritual formation and practice in light of this Jesus Creed.

Copies of the book are available from the church for $23, or from  www.amazon.ca for $21.50 for the paperback or $5.17 for the Kindle edition, which can be read on any device using the free Kindle app.

It's that time of year to subscribe to or renew The United Church Observer magazine. It contains socially relevant articles, both Christian and secular.
