April 2019
I have loved watching movies throughout my life. My preferences are human interest stories -- that exemplify how God/Good/Love always is present and wins; biographies, child actors, and historical. One night recently, in my hotel home I began looking through the offerings of movies. I ran across one I've seen before and wanted to re-watch. It is called "The Ugly Truth". I was struck by the realism of what the male actor, Gerard Butler, portrayed as a macho, know-it-all, truth teller regarding relationships. The actress Katherine Heigl portrays a female who can't get it right with men, die-hard romantic, chasing the fairy tale bride outcomes. They both can eventually see the depth of the wounds and fear they both carry that is blocking them for anything beyond the pain.
I've practiced throughout my life and especially in mediation, ministry, and family matters to look for and be understanding about the hurts and wounds that often underlie our human behaviors. This movie depicted a similar basis. One very deep, hurtful encounter that caused an attempt at hardening the heart to prevent such future pain. Like -- that is possible! Ultimately, love wins -- but not without some mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual gyrations.
Talking about hurts seems easy for some, even so familiar that we take on the identity of the "wounded one"; "the victim" as an archetype is the most primordial of all. I'm also aware of the SPACE this type of stuck energy occupies in our hearts and minds. I'm also aware of the impact these beliefs and memories have on the ways we have blindly structured our lives.

In March, I facilitated a group class entitled "Rightsizing Your Mind, Space and Spirit".  Here's a shout out to those brave and determined ones who committed and took action toward their aims and goals. During the class we discovered several underlying beliefs that kept us stuck in our old, painful, not desirable ways of being. We also took small and large steps toward bringing new spaciousness to our minds, hearts, homes, and finances. (I'm happy to share the resources we used to jumpstart our "spring cleaning". If you're interested, email me at marthacreek@gmail.com.

Sometimes we need to head into the storm, into the stuck energy, fears, inertia, or clutter, to appreciate and regain a renewed passion for the bounty and beauty of life. Giving ourselves back a more interesting life, living, mental, emotional, and physical space is our own responsibility.

The more time you spend pretending that ultimate truths don't exist, the more time you waste not being your authentic self and getting the most out of every precious second. Allow the list below to ignite the spark of motivation you need to make better use of the time you have on this planet. Rightsizing your life leads the way. Here's a link to a fantastic resource I read daily for practical insights into our humanness and road maps for navigating new ways of being. I've modified the longer lists for this newsletter.
Here are a few of some "ugly" truths we can integrate and begin to re-structure our lives and living. This integration can give us back some spaciousness and solid ground of understanding we live from.
1. You're going to die and you have no idea when.

Acknowledge the fact of your own mortality, and then start structuring your life in a more meaningful way NOW.

  2. Everyone you love is going to die, and you don't know when.

This truth may be saddening at first, but it also gives you permission to make amends with past difficulties and re-establish meaningful relationships with important figures in your life. Live with less regret.

 3. Your obsession with finding happiness is what prevents its attainment.

Happiness is always present in your life--it's just a matter of connecting to it, clearing the stuck energy or old ways, and allowing it to flow through you.

4. You can't make everyone happy, and if you try, you'll lose yourself.

Stop trying to please, and start respecting your own values, principles, and autonomy.

5. You can't be perfect, and holding yourself to unrealistic standards creates suffering.

Many perfectionists have unrelenting inner critics that are full of so much rage and self-hate that it tears them apart inside. Amplify your intuition, and take down your unrealistic and unattainable standards.

6. Your thoughts are less important than your feelings and your feelings need acknowledgment.

Intellectually thinking through your problems isn't as helpful as safely, effectively expressing the feelings that create your difficulties in the first place.

7. Your actions speak louder than your words, so you need to hold yourself accountable.

Be responsible and take actions that move you in the direction of your aims and goals for life and living.

8. You are the author of your life's story.

Stop looking for people to give you sympathy and start creating the life story you want to live.

9. Your ambition means nothing without execution--it's time to put in the work.

If you want to change the world, then go out there and do it! Start with your inner world!
Planning your life -- or a NEW life requires you to ask yourself questions. What do you value above all else? How do you choose to live out those values? What would make you excited to get up in the morning? Or at least to dread less? What change can you make that would give you some emotional, physical, financial, spiritual space? GO FOR IT!
I hold the best of thoughts for you and of you. Godspeed in your rightsizing, wherever the road leads. I look forward to seeing you in person if possible. Always, together in heart.

"Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth."
