Floral Design

Norah Van Riper and Colleen Harrigan

The third annual Valentine's Floral Workshop was a midwinter delight! About fifteen Club members braved a pretty-but-snowy Saturday to come to the Wakeman Center to create beautiful and unique floral arrangements. Nancy Cabot kindly shared her experience and insight with us after Colleen Harrigan's debut as floral design instructor. The flowers, chosen by Emily Coulter at Morrice Florist, were stunning. As Colleen said at the workshop, even though everyone participating received the same assortment of blooms and greens, no two arrangements were alike - that's the beauty of art! Floral Design thanks to everyone who made this event possible.

Coming up! The ever-popular Nancy's Challenge will be returning for the membership meeting on April 13! Whether you're hoping to prime your imagination for Blooming Art or just enjoy interpreting a piece of art using flowers and other natural elements, we hope you'll participate. We'll send out the artwork chosen by Nancy Cabot in advance of the meeting and invite you to create a floral arrangement inspired by the piece. Please bring it along to the April 13 meeting if you're attending in-person, but you're also welcome to send a photograph of your arrangement from anywhere and we'll display it at the meeting.

Save the date! Our next Foraging Field Trip, led by our intrepid foragers Nancy Weaver and Nancy Cabot, will be Tuesday, May 26, at 1:00 p.m. at Lucy Vincent Beach. More details in a future newsletter!

Plantings are looking good and some seeds have been started with more to be sown in the next few weeks. The Greenhouse crew

Walkabouts 2026: Share Your Garden with Fellow Members

Ty Johnston

It’s time to plan for the 2026 season of Walkabouts! These informal garden visits are a relaxed way to exchange ideas, inspiration, and gardening tips. Over the past few springs and summers, members across the Vineyard have opened their gardens—large and small—for others to explore, and we’d love to see more gardens shared this year!

A “walkabout,” defined as a short, reflective wander, is the perfect way to experience the beauty and individuality of each garden. Some gardens are pristine, some are works in progress, and many will have a wheelbarrow or tools leaning casually against the shed. Gardens evolve over time, so repeat visits can be a delightful discovery, and new members will find plenty of surprises.

Walkabouts are held from May through August, and you can choose the day and time that works best for you. This year, we hope to offer some late afternoon visits to accommodate members with outside jobs. If you’d like to host your garden or learn more, contact Ty Johnston at 339-364-1363 or tyrene.johnston@gmail.com. We’ll compile a schedule and share it with all members.

Bringing Blooms & Cheer to Navigator Homes (formerly Windemere)

Joan Eville

We are supporting residents of Windemere as they transition to Navigator Homes. Our first floral arranging activity and craft session will take place in March after February’s program was canceled due to the recent snowstorm. The club looks forward to continuing our support as residents settle into their new home. We encourage you to read the recent Vineyard Gazette article to learn more about the transition. Our volunteers have toured the new building and made preparations for future visits. We’ve also been provided a cupboard to store vases, tablecloths, and supplies — a wonderful help as we continue this meaningful outreach.
