From our President...
I’m thrilled to report that Blooming Art this year was a success in all categories!
Thanks to Jayne, Trudy and our terrific designers, the floral designs were beautiful and superbly
reflected a wide range of impressive art. Sheila and Wiet invited some renowned island artists
to the show. The Old Mill looked magical. Gay and Laurie worked hard leading their band of
docents.
Donna’s marketing and social networking gave us great visibility and generated excitement.
Stephen’s poster this year was spectacular.
Many enthusiastic volunteers, including members new to the Club, made the show run
flawlessly and contributed to a sense of community, and many compliments from our guests.
Although Alysa’s numbers are still preliminary, Blooming Art this year took in over $12,000! Art
sale revenue was almost double last year’s, and we had almost 500 attendees. The Club also
gained 7 new members.
Thank you to everyone who helped make our major annual fundraiser successful!

Shared by Wiet Bacheller...
Just before midnight, this past Sunday night Wiet noticed that her husband John's 'night blooming cereus' opened up. Wiet titled her email to me 'A perfect Closing for Blooming Art'...which I agree with (since the final day of BA was Sunday). I thought it appropriate to share it with the Club, given the timing. The plant is a night-blooming cereus (the common name) referring to a large number of flowering ceroid cacti that bloom at night. The flowers are short lived, and some of these species, such as the Selenicereus grandiflorus, bloom only once a year, and for only one single night. Very Cool!

CONGRATS TO OUR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT, ELLA BUCHERT!
At Senior Awards night at the OB Tabernacle, the MV Garden Club presented its $1,500.00 Scholarship to graduate Ella Buchert. In a commitment to encourage future generations to preserve and improve our island and make the world a better place, the Club awards scholarships to Vineyard high school students bound for a college major in a field related to horticulture, landscape, environmental studies, farming, or other connected areas of study.
Our recipient for 2022, Ella Buchert will attend the University of MA Amherst in the fall, majoring in Environmental Studies. She was an intern at Polly Hill Arboretum as their herbarium intern and was president of Interact Club, which is a service based club at the high school. This included weekly volunteering at the food bank. Here is a quote from Ella’s application that our presenter and Club Secretary, Joan Eville read at the awards presentation, ‘I want to be able to help solve climate issues that are happening right where I live, and around the world.’ We wish Ella and the entire class of 2022 much success in their future endeavors!
The MVGC scholarship is available subject to the approval of the MVGC Board of Directors annually. Scholarships are funded by member donations and proceeds from the Club's Blooming Art event. As a result of membership and community generosity, the Club has awarded over $21,000 in scholarships to Island graduates over the years.

Call for Volunteers: Eastville Cemetery folks and organizer, Frank Kostka are looking for help to plant and resurrect this historic black cemetery that is located on The African-American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard. This is NOT being organized by any MVGC member...but if you want to help, please contact Frank via 4merdawg@gmail.com.
Backstory: Frank commented on one of our Garden Club Facebook posts asking if we could help out. Given the fact that the Club was/is immersed in the plant sale and Blooming Art, I offered to put a call to action in our next newsletter.

What an inspirational workshop Nancy & Judy gave for the BA Floral designers at the end of May! Here is some info and pics from the class!
|
|
Former Garden Club Presidents Judy Bryant and Nancy Cabot held an interactive floral demonstration session in prep for our Blooming Art event as a support to our beloved floral designers! The workshop featured helpful hints for floral design including choosing and caring for flowers, containers, size and scale of arrangements, accessories and mechanics of flower arranging. Attendance was great and some GC members asked for opinions after the workshop ended. We thank these special sisters sincerely for once again sharing their knowledge with all of us!

BLOOMING BIDS FOR KIDS DONATION!
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands is hosting Blooming Bids for Kids at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury in late June. It is a fundraiser and the MVGC is donating a basket of garden related items along with a household membership to the MVGC for one year!
Thanks so much to the members who jumped in and donated some lovely garden-related items for our Blooming Bids for Kids Silent Auction basket. The basket total value is $299.00 and includes a GC household membership! This opportunity came together really fast and due to the cutoff date we didn't have an opportunity to ask the entire membership. But don't feel left out...we will do it again next year, so hopefully we will donate a basket worth 3 or four times what we've donated this year!

THE GARDEN CLUB'S ANNUAL PLANT SALE
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!
|
|
Over Memorial Day weekend, the Greenhouse Committee hosted their annual plant sale! It was a group effort with some members helping to move plants from Wakeman to the Old Mill grounds and the Greenhouse Committee set up the window boxes and boards for plant display!
|
|
|
Despite some rainy weather, the Club netted over $4,000.00 through the Plant Sale this year, so huge thanks and kudo's go to our amazing Greenhouse Committee! They are a dedicated and knowledgeable group and we want them to know how much we appreciate all they do!
The Greenhouse Committee consists of the following Garden Club members: Marilyn Bergeron, Wesley Brown, Shelley Brown, Judy Bryant, Tracie Clark, Mary Ann Dolezsar, Angela Egerton, Bob Geary, Carol Goldstein, Al Eville, Jackie Hokanson, Carol Jackson, Charlie Lopresti, Vito Palermo, Mary Lou Perry, Mary St. Germain, Sue Silva, Judi Worthington.
According to Wesley, (the Committee Chair), the group had been unable to meet together during the pandemic, but he is hoping that the Greenhouse Committee will be able to resume their weekly 9:30 A.M. Monday work together at the greenhouse in September. They are always happy to have new volunteer workers and are hoping for some extra hands to help out come Wintertime.

We’re set to plant 1,000 New England blazing-star plants at Bamford on Thursday at 10am. This will be our first rare plant introduction there and an important milestone for the site! We have somewhere around 10 volunteers so far but need more help. If you could spread the word to your volunteer core, it’d be greatly appreciated. They can RSVP with me at mike.whittemore@tnc.org. Thank you very much!
