'A Way We Grow'

January 2022
The President's Corner:
Welcome to the inaugural edition of A Way We Grow! The Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club community enjoys a long tradition of environmental and historical preservation, wonderful garden experiences and education. Today, as our community is growing and programs continue to evolve, we’re excited to offer you another way to stay informed about activities and learn about some of our members.
Susan Hobart, MVGC President
Calling all GC Members who love flower arranging...
"Flowers, Friendship and Fun!"
Welcome to Blooming Art 2022. We would like to extend a warm invitation to you to join our Floral Design Team this year. And if you do, we promise it will provide you with flowers, friendship, and fun with your fellow Garden Club members!
Our iconic event will take place from June 17th to 19th this year with our Opening Night Reception on June 16th. It showcases island artists, flowers, and the Old Mill. UPCOMING MEETING INFO:

Thanks to Omicron, our February program will most likely be planned as virtual. The date is February 15, 2022 @ 1:00pm. Stay tuned to our website or our public Facebook page for updates.

Program: 'Gardening in a Changing Climate' presented by Jennie Slossberg.
From our Edgartown VP:

Thank you for the treats you provided for the club's first “Grab and Go” refreshments at the Wakeman Center in-person meeting. Wonderful, individually wrapped, cookies, cupcakes, fudge, brownies and even the old Ritz crackers with marshmallow and peanut butter, coated with chocolate. Fingers crossed we will return soon to our usual sweet and savory treats served in person. I will need some help with that “huge” coffee pot at our next turn to provide refreshments. Have never made coffee in my life, big pot or small pot. Not even a mug full.
FYI: It’s in the bylaws. Refreshments are alphabetically rotated by town.
Trudy Williams, VP Edgartown
From our Treasurer:

Is your MVGC membership up-to-date? Our fiscal year runs from Jan. 1 - Dec. 31. Renewing/joining and donating is easy! Just go to this link: There, you can renew, join for 2022, and also make a donation to support our Scholarship and Old Mill Funds. We rely on members to fund these important initiatives - The Scholarship Fund allows us to offer a scholarship each year to a high school senior planning to pursue environmental studies and the Old Mill Fund underwrites upkeep of our lovely, almost 200-year old building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you have questions about your dues status for 2022, please contact treasurer Alysa Emden.
From our Secretary:

As secretary of the Garden Club I have been writing thank you’s to members who have contributed to our scholarship fund and to the upkeep of the Old Mill with their dues payments. Your generosity is greatly appreciated especially during this financially challenging year for our club.             Joan Eville, secretary
February’s Birth Flower
Even though so many roses are sold during February due to Valentine’s Day, the Violet and the Primrose are the symbolic flowers.
The violet signifies watchfulness, loyalty, and faithfulness. Give a violet to someone to let them know that you’ll always be there for them.
The primrose lets someone know that you can’t live without them.
A HUGE Welcome our
NEW MVGC Members!

'Save The Date' for the MVGC's annual Plant Sale...May 17 and May 28 & 29, 2022!

Our Greenhouse Committee members run and manage the MV Garden Club's annual plant sale, which is held in mid-May, after our general meeting at the Wakeman Center. (Meeting date: May 17) Many of the plants are grown from cuttings the greenhouse team cultivates throughout the Winter and into Spring at the Greenhouse @Wakeman. The plants grown from these cuttings and seeds are used to grow a variety of herbs and annuals for the sale which is an important fundraiser for the Club each year. On Memorial Day weekend, the MV Garden Club plant sale is open to the public on the grounds at The Old Mill. The dates this year are May 28 & 29. (Saturday & Sunday) Do support the Greenhouse Committee and the MVGC by making some purchases. We look forward to seeing you there!
'Climate Change Week' Call to Action...

Members of the Garden Club have expressed interest in our Club taking part in the 'Climate Change Week' initiative taking place on Island later this year. It has been rescheduled from November, 2021 to the second week in May 2022, May 8 to May 14, 2022.
Those arranging the events are hoping to engage many Island organizations and committees. It would be wonderful to have our Club as a part of such an important initiative. If this is an issue that is important to you, do consider building a 'Climate Change Committee' within your Garden Club friends and bring your ideas as to how the Garden Club can participate to the Executive Board. Its a wonderful way to build community awareness about climate issues that effect us all and in turn, let other Island communities know how important this issue is to our Club.

A Little about The Garden Club's Social Media...
Looking for a past Garden Club Zoom presentation?
We are excited to tell you that the MVGC now has its very own YouTube Channel!
The decision came on the heels of wanting to offer previous speaker presentations to all Club members, 24/7... even if they were not able to attend a meeting. The only way to do so was to create a place for them to be archived, and so it goes.
Backstory is that Zoom will only allow so much room on there servers to store/archive recordings, so after Zoom no longer allowed access to most of our 2021 meetings, Karen Huff (webmaster extraordinaire!) created a YouTube Channel for the Club. There we can store and enjoy any and all of the Club's past meetings. The only catch is that we have to get OK from the presenter prior to posting. This is still a bit of a work in progress, but the good news is that we can record and post lots of things to our Channel! (Think Blooming Art, The Plant Sale...the possibilities are endless!) We hope you are as excited about this new and exciting news as we are!
Your feedback is most welcomed!

Did you know there is a private Facebook Group that MV Garden Club members can join? The group was created for members to discuss with each other all things gardening, horticulture, conservation...or whatever topics are of interest to you! Share garden tips or let others know about a virtual class you enjoyed. Even though there are some downsides to it, social media has become a wonderful way of staying connected to others and sharing information. (Especially in these Covid times) If you are on Facebook, do join us there!

(The image above is the one you will see on the 'Members Only' Group!)
We want to know...
How do you, our members feel about resuming in-person meetings? There are many schools of thought on the topic, so we thought we would ask the membership. The Board has mixed feelings about when to resume having in-person meetings so do let Susan know your thoughts.
What Holiday Fun We Had!
A fun and informative Wreath Decorating Workshop was held at the Wakeman Center in early December. (Who knew there was a certain technique necessary to create the perfect Holiday wreath!) The workshop was well attended and enjoyed by many of our GC members! Thanks to MaryAnn Dolezar for organizing and to Nancy Cabot and Judy Bryant for instructing! Every member who attended left with Holiday spirit and a striking wreath of fresh greens beautifully decorated!

The Old Mill was fabulously festooned for our Holiday Party held in December! Even Covid couldn't keep us from celebrating the Season with a simple get-together. Hopefully, 2022's events will be 'back to business as usual' without face masks and social distancing!
Thank you to Cynthia Bloomquist and Thaw Malin who were so thoughtful in sharing a few photos of their magnificent Winter garden with me! I hope they'll be especially enjoyed by those of you who may not be braving the Vineyard's first significant 2022 snowfall! Members may recall Thaw & Cynthia's Esiderap presentation to the Garden Club in October of 2021. (And if you didn't catch it then, it's available for viewing now on our new YouTube Channel! )
The Communications Committee have been actively working to update the MV Garden Club website, so do check it from time to time for new pages, news and updates about the Club, the Board and our active Club Committees.
Our goal is to enhance communications with current Garden Club members and to attract new members to our Club. Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and our website will no doubt make it easier for our Club to be found via social media and for us to be recognized as the dynamic, creative and community focused Club we are. Do join us on social media if you have not already, and share our pages with your friends. That's how we will grow together!
