'A Way We Grow'
Martha's Vineyard Garden Club
July - 2023
From our President...
Dear Garden Club Members,

What a spectacular month we’ve had, with our two major annual fundraisers, the PLANT SALE and BLOOMING ART, only three weeks apart! Both events were very successful.
When the previous Greenhouse Committee retired last fall, we budgeted $0 revenue, but thanks to enthusiastic Club and greenhouse newcomers led by Anne Kushwaha, revenues from the sale equated to last year’s results.

Blooming Art garnered acclaim for the spectacular floral designs, many by new club members. 16 of the 36 works of displayed art, sold as well as 6 pieces of unframed art from the bin. Last year we broke previous records with 13 framed works having been sold. We also learned a lot
from this year’s event that will make Blooming Arts even more successful.

What gratifies me most, though, is that the Garden Club is healthy and thriving: many of you volunteers are new to the club, enjoy participating and have developed a sense of community. Membership has grown to 180, and one third are new members this year!

A THANK YOU to all of you who participated. Now we can all take a beat and prepare for holiday houseguests!

But if you’re free, stop by the Old Mill for our first 4:00 Friday of the season on June 30 from 4:00-5:30, meet some Board members. - Susan Hobart, Club President
Our Next Meeting: Tuesday, July 18, 2023
Social Time: 12:30,
Meeting/Program Time: 1:00pm
Location: The Old Mill in West Tisbury

Speaker: Samantha Look of the Vineyard Conservation Society
Program Title: 'Love Song for the Vineyard Lawn'
FREE to MVGC Members / Non-members @ $10.00 pp
Oak Bluffs members to provide snacks & refreshments

The 'veteran' Club members and designers who provided support to our Blooming Art floral designers each gave a different presentation and perspective at the demonstrations done prior to Blooming Art. The final demo was done by Nancy Cabot. Her 'natural' ease and simple but well thought out approach to floral design and use of foraged materials left us all with a real appreciation of the foliage, grasses and flowers we have in our own backyards or along the roadside. Here are a few photos from Nancy's presentation to us at Wakeman...
Thank you, Nancy...you are a true MV Garden Club 'treasure'!
Nancy demonstrates her natural approach to floral design!
Simply lovely!

Our Summertime Fundraiser...
An Edgartown Garden Stroll!
The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club
showcases five private gardens,
and one public botanic garden located
in the midst of Edgartown.

The Edgartown Stroll is set for Thursday, August 10, 2023, from 10am - 3pm, rain or shine. Five private Edgartown gardens will be 'open' for the Stroll along with one public botanic garden. The gardens collectively are traditional, quaint, historic and eclectic and are in fairly close proximity to each other. We estimate the Stroll and time between gardens taking 2.5 - 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

Admission to the MV Garden Club's Stroll may be purchased in advance @ $50.00 per person via the MV Garden Club website. Tickets purchased on the day of the Stroll will cost $60.00. Before beginning the Stroll, those who have pre-purchased admission should check in at the Gate House of The Cooke House and Legacy Garden, to pick up their program guide and map for the Stroll. Attendees may start the Stroll at whichever garden they choose. Check-in/ticket pick up will begin at 9:30am and will go throughout the day. On-line advance on-line sales will end on August 1.
Below are our Sponsors for the Edgartown Garden Stroll!
We thank them sincerely for supporting this event and we hope in turn
that our members will support them!

To Our Members...
Regarding the Edgartown Garden Stroll:

Tickets are being purchased and we've begun painting the Island with posters!

We are looking for a few more
MVGC members to volunteer as guides for the private gardens
during the Stroll.
There will be two shifts (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) and volunteers will be given a complimentary ticket to the Stroll in exchange for volunteering. There will be time either before or after the shift to enjoy the Stroll. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to one of the Co-Chairs, either Anne Kushwaha or Donna Arold and we will contact you to explain your role as guide. Thank you in advance for helping to make this event a success!

Summer is just beginning, but did your garden not perform as expected or desired this spring?

A great way to perk up your garden performance when perennials are slow to launch and you haven't gotten your annuals in, is to plant bulbs. Whether it's early performing bulbs such as narcissus or tulips or the wide variety of later performing alliums (late May early June).

And the place to buy these bulbs is through Bloomin' Bucks at Brent and Becky's. The garden club receives 25% of every order placed when you use the link below and the drop down menu choosing Martha's Vineyard Garden Club. It's not too early to place an order which will be sent in the fall at the proper time for our zone. If you need delivery before heading south for the winter you can call and request that the delivery or make a notation in the comments section which they should be able to accommodate.
A Warm Welcome to our
