A Letter From Our President & CEO
“Heroism is endurance for one moment more.” - George F. Kennan
“I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” - Christopher Reeve
| |
Growing up in Michigan, I became a Detroit Tigers fan, and along with several million others, I became a devout fan of our beloved right fielder, Al Kaline. In the “old days,” it was not uncommon for a player to come up through the farm system and play their entire career for the same franchise. As time goes by, it has become exceedingly unusual for a player to remain loyal to the team and fan base that afforded them the opportunity for stardom.
Derek Jeter is one of the anomalies whose career harkens back to the days when baseball was a graceful and somewhat romantic pastime. Derek’s numbers as a player speak for themselves. He was a legendary player and competitor, but his athleticism was no match for his leadership, competitiveness, consistency, and dedication as a role model for a
| | |
generation of young players. In Derek’s final season, every single ballpark in the country gave him roaring, standing ovations when he made his final appearance as a player. We are honored to present “The Captain’s Corner – Derek Jeter’s Journey from Kalamazoo to the Elliott.” This stunning exhibition is made possible by the genuine kindness and generosity of Patrick Armstrong and his son Brian, who share their comprehensive collection of Derek Jeter memorabilia with the Elliott Museum and our truly fortunate guests. This exhibit will be a memorable experience for Yankee fans in particular, but all baseball fans will enjoy this tribute to a living legend. I hope you will count yourself among them.
All the best,

ART & HISTORY COLLECTION CURATOR, CHESSY RICCA
The Patrick Armstrong collection of Derek Jeter memorabilia is perhaps the only one of its kind. Patrick began collection when his son, Brian, started playing baseball in 1997 at the age of four. Together, the father and son would collect cards and spend hours going through them and organizing based on pricing books. For Patrick, collecting was all about spending time with Brian. Eventually Patrick’s son grew up to play shortstop just like Jeter who proved to be an excellent role model. After many years of collecting, Patrick began to realize that his collection told a story through Jeter’s milestones. Interestingly, the two never thought the collection would reach its current size!
This is the first time Patrick Armstrong has made his collection available to the public in an exhibit. When asked what Patrick’s favorite item in his collection was, his response was the first autographed photo of Jeter with four World Series rings. This item, along with many other Jeter baseball cards, baseballs, jerseys and photographs will be on display throughout the entirety of the exhibit ending in October 2024.

DEBORAH MARKO
What did you do for a living in your career life?
For 37 years I taught in the School District of Lancaster, mainly 4th and 5th grade. Since I was in the same school for 35 years, I was able to watch children grow up and start families of their own. A friend once told me that when you have grandchildren of children you taught, it is time to go. The grandchildren were in second grade, so it was time to retire. For the next six years I worked with my husband at his marina. We both loved boating.
What are your special interests/passions?
Passions. I love people, history, reading, the sea, and traveling. As I am writing this, I am aboard the ORION off the coast of New Zealand.
What is something that would surprise us about you?
Riding with my husband on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, we completed the Four Corners Ride in 21 days, 10,336 miles. We rode in all 48 states and many Canadien provinces. In the summer I spend many days out on the Chesapeake Bay aboard my 15 foot boat, TEACHERS PET.
What’s your favorite thing about volunteering at the HSMC?
The people I meet at the House of Refuge are so interesting and friendly. Many have no idea how close WWII came to the state of Florida. When I drive over the bridge I say a prayer, so thankful that I have the opportunity to be a docent at the House of Refuge and share what I have learned.
Also, Michael is a great guy, what a "boss."
