Martin County Recognized as an Academically High-Performing School District for Third Consecutive Year
|
|
Martin County’s rich tradition of academic excellence continues, as the Martin County School District has been named an Academically High-Performing School District by the Florida Department of Education for the third consecutive year. The District is one of just 16 school districts - and the only district on the Treasure Coast - to earn the prestigious award for the 2020-2021 school year.
The Academically High-Performing School District designation is based on school/district grades for the 2018-2019 school year (or 2020-20201 if opted into), financial audit reviews for the 2019-2020 school year and class size compliance during the 2020-2021 school year.
“It is an honor to receive the Florida Department of Education's prestigious Academically High-Performing School District designation,” Superintendent John D. Millay shared. “Academic performance, fiscal responsibility and systemic compliance with state regulations are all factors that ensure we are able to carry out our mission of educating all students for success. If you come across a Martin County student or employee out in our community, please congratulate them for doing their part in helping us to achieve this honor. It takes a village to raise our children and this designation means our hard work is being recognized at the state level.”
In addition to Martin County, the following school systems met the criteria to be named Academically High-Performing School Districts for the 2020-2021 school year: Brevard, Clay, Collier, Gilchrist, Lafayette, Liberty, Monroe, Okaloosa, Palm Beach, Santa Rosa, St. Johns, Seminole, Sumter, Wakulla and Walton.

Five Schools Earn Florida Department of Education's "School of Excellence" Designation for 2020-2021 School Year
|
|
Section 1003.631, Florida Statutes, requires the State Board of Education to designate a school as a School of Excellence if the school's percentage of possible points earned in its school grade calculation is in the 80th percentile or higher for schools comprised of the same grade groupings (elementary, middle, high and combination) for at least two of the last three school years. The Schools of Excellence Program was established to provide administrative flexibility to the state's top schools so that the instructional personnel and administrative staff at such schools are able to continue serving their communities and increasing student learning to the best of their professional ability.
In the 2020-2021 school year, 767 schools throughout the state earned the School of Excellence designation. Of these schools, 578 maintained their designation from 2018-19, 181 renewed their designation and eight were newly designated by opting in to their 2020-2021 school grade and meeting the requirements for the first time.
Congratulations to the following Martin County schools for earning the School of Excellence designation in the 2020-2021 school year:
- Bessey Creek Elementary School
- Palm City Elementary School
- Hidden Oaks Middle School
- Clark Advanced Learning Center

LEGO Robotics Immersion Experience Coming Soon to Elementary and Middle Schools
|
|
The Martin County School District will introduce a new, immersive learning experience at all elementary and middle schools in the second semester of the 2021-2022 school year. On October 19, 2021, the Martin County School Board approved the implementation of LEGO Education Robotics programs in grades 4, 6, 7 and 8. These programs, which will be introduced in February 2022, have been designed to engage students in the hands-on investigation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) concepts using everyday themes. In addition to learning computer science and design engineering concepts, students enrolled in the programs will also develop their literacy, math and social-emotional skills as they turn concepts into reality.
All students enrolled in fourth grade will participate in a robotics experience focused on computer science, computational thinking and 21st-century skills. The program will allow all elementary students to have experience with robotics before middle school, supporting student interest and fostering the potential growth of programs at the secondary level. Students enrolled in grades 6-8 will have the opportunity to enroll in a semester-long robotics elective that will also highlight the same subject areas and skills with an emphasis on mathematics applications.
"As part of our school district's mission of educating all students for success, we must continue to look for opportunities to expose students to STEAM-related concepts," Superintendent John D. Millay shared. "Through our district's involvement in the FIRST Robotics Competition, our nationally-renowned FRC Team 180 S.P.A.M., and many other local clubs, we know that experiences afforded to students through their participation in robotics programs are invaluable. We are excited about the opportunity students throughout the Martin County School District will have to build their leadership and critical thinking skills while also exploring subject areas associated with our global economy and workforce."
Please click here to learn more about the new robotics curriculum and each program's alignment to Florida standards. More information about these innovative learning experiences will be shared with families in the coming months.

WPTV - A one-time bonus could be in the works for more than one thousand employees in the Martin County School District.

Other requests outlined in the District's ESSER II pandemic relief proposal include reimbursement for protective equipment, extra computers and summer school programming.
