TCPalm: Martin County School Board Weighing Options to Redistrict Schools, Ease Crowding
|
|
TCPalm - The Martin County School Board still wants to redraw school boundaries for next school year, but a big question remains: who will be affected?
At issue is whether the School Board should focus solely on easing enrollments at the district's three high schools or also address elementary and middle school enrollments and zone boundaries.
The Boundary Advisory Committee has recommended the School Board address overcapacity at high schools. Of six possible options to redraw school zone boundaries — based on current maps and enrollment and future growth projections — the committee recommended three plans that impact only high schools. The other three options address elementary or middle schools.

WPTV: Martin County School District Begins New Chapter of English Language Arts Education
|
|
WPTV - As Florida schools close the book on Common Core standards, the Martin County School District is beginning a new chapter with its English and Language Arts curriculum.
A teacher reading to students and kids listening intently and answering questions may look like an average first-grade class. But what happens next inside one Port Salerno Elementary School classroom sets it apart.
"She reads that book. But the work they are going to do after that read-aloud is they are going to be comparing and contrasting two different books. And they’ll be talking about what are the struggles the characters face," said Courtney Beard, the District's K-5 ELA Program specialist.
And that advanced work happening in classrooms across the school district is all part of the new English Language Arts curriculum that Martin County adopted this year.
"We had to make a big decision. We could have adopted kindergarten through second grade a new curriculum, reading and writing B.E.S.T. Standards, but we decided to go big and go K through 12," Beard said.

"We spent time considering the plants we had and how we might organize/classify them into planters in a way that made sense and would allow us to give tours in the future to younger students," Ms. Urbay shared. "The students came up with ideas, such as having one planter specifically for flowering plants and another for non-flowering plants. Now we are learning about specific plants, their unique needs, their uses and how we can best care for them for as long as we can keep them alive!"
Way to go, Sailfish!
