Steve: You know I cannot stop writing about magnesium, even when it is more popular than ever.

In Matters of the Heart

Of nine dietary minerals screened in a Frontiers in Nutrition study, increased magnesium intake significantly reduced all-cause mortality risk in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Magnesium deficiency is associated with increased risk of cardiac arrest as well as respiratory failure and acute coronary syndrome, according to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition.

Magnesium is important for myriad physiological functions, including supporting behavioral health and sleep regulation, making it an essential mineral for children’s overall well-being. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a deficiency in this nutrient may impact symptoms related to ADHD and sleep quality. By prioritizing magnesium in children, you can help build a long-lasting understanding of food as nourishment. In some situations, supplementation is paramount in supporting a child’s health.

Researchers publishing in European Journal of Nutrition found a strong link between low magnesium levels and high amounts of the genotoxic amino acid homocysteine. This toxic combination damages the body's genes, making people more susceptible to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, gastrointestinal diseases, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, a range of cancers, and diabetes.

Adequate magnesium balance is necessary for a wide range of functions, including pancreatic beta-cell function and optimal insulin secretion, as magnesium inadequacy is associated with beta-cell dysfunction and insulin resistance, both prominent hallmarks of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, magnesium supplementation improves insulin sensitivity, as reported in Frontiers in Nutrition.

A study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests lower dietary magnesium intake was associated with higher risk of incident chronic kidney disease in adults with clinically normal kidney function.

You can see improvement in your health no matter how old you are. An 87 year-old man came to see Steve with extreme constipation and gastrointestinal pain.

He had been in and out of the hospital with stool blockages, had a bowel resection, was on strong pain medication, as well as extreme polypharmacy. Suffice it to say his blood work looked awful. Even on pain medication, he was in debilitating pain. He was willing to do whatever it took to have less pain.

While the changes he had to make in so many aspects of his life were extreme for his age, after one meeting with Steve, he followed everything to the letter and felt a change very quickly. In his words, "my stomach pain, which I was getting almost daily, is gone". He also got back to his normal weight and was able to wean off some medications.

In his own words: "My IBS is the best it has been in a long time. I went to the cardiologist this morning for my yearly exam. He says I'm doing great. Everything is working well. Even my leaky aortic heart valve is doing better than it was last year. He said that I owe all of this to my new diet".

In “Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul” there is an account of a wounded soldier who was shot in the back of his left leg, which blasted apart his hamstring.

He wore a leg brace and used crutches, which lead to foot drop along with his body twisting and bending forward. He also suffered from excruciating back pain, burning hip pain, arm numbness, joint pain and only sleeping a couple of hours every night. On top of that he had difficulty walking and could no longer sit on his buttocks but could kneel on the floor. 

He was able to find work for a while but when that ended he stayed confined in his home for many years. His only venture outside the house was staying bent over to play pool. It was during a game at a pool hall that someone recommended he see their chiropractor. 

The chiropractor saw that the retired soldier was kneeling so that’s how he began adjusting him. After that first visit he got extremely tired and slept for days. The adjustment was helping his body to rest and heal as he hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in decades. His body had that response after each adjustment and then a few weeks later the constant fatigue lifted. 

As he continued receiving chiropractic care he could sit on his buttocks, stand taller and experience a lot less pain. He even ended up driving three hours straight in a car without pain to visit his daughter. He told the chiropractor “The most profound change is my state of mind because I’m actually happy now.” What a blessing for that soldier to have hope again.
