Mary Lou's Career Spans Two Countries with her Exceptional Care
Immigrating from the Philippines, St. Anne's Mead was one of Mary Lou's first stops 25 years ago!
Jane honored Kiffney (L) and Mary Lou (R) for their 25-years of outstanding service to the St. Anne's Mead Community.
With her husband, Ferdie, already settled in America as an Engineer, Mary Lou and her two-year old daughter, Nicole immigrated to the U.S. in 1994. Having a solid caregiving career in the Philippines, Mary Lou was eager to work once arriving in her new home. "We have a long history of nursing and caregiving in the Philippines and I wanted to continue it in the U.S.," said Mary Lou. The history is indeed interesting. During times of war and conflict, hardworking Filipina nurses and caregivers even used their own homes to care for wounded soldiers because the need was so great. Nurses and caregivers were admired for their work in the Philippines.

Soon after making some new friends, she heard of a position at St. Anne's Mead for a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) /Caregiver. "I applied and was thrilled to join the team. I met Kiffney, who had just joined St. Anne's Mead one month before me in 1994. We worked together and she mentored me," said Mary Lou.

Today, Mary Lou is certainly admired for her care at St. Anne's Mead and she and Kiffney are celebrating 25 years of service!

Mary Lou attributes the key to her longevity at SAM to the family-like atmosphere and the deep relationships she's developed with staff and residents alike. "We pride ourselves on the best level of care, and that has never changed," she said. "I would never want to work in a place where care was not the top priority."

The deep tradition of nursing and caregiving passed down to Mary Lou's daughter, Nicole. Today, she is an RN in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Detroit Receiving Hospital at DMC. "She loves being a nurse, helping people to heal and feel comforted and well," said Mary Lou.
