IMPORTANT: Action is required. Please take the time to carefully read through the information below. Maryland FAMLI requires action from employers, and there are important steps you’ll need to complete to make sure your business is prepared and compliant.

What is Maryland FAMLI?

Maryland FAMLI (Family and Medical Leave Insurance) is Maryland's new paid family and medical leave program. It is designed to give eligible Maryland employees paid, job-protected time away from work when they need to care for themselves or their family.

Beginning January 1, 2028, eligible employees may receive up to 12 weeks of paid leave and benefits of up to $1,000 per week for qualifying situations such as:

  • 👶 Welcoming or bonding with a new child
  • ❤️ Dealing with their own serious health condition
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Caring for a family member with a serious health condition
  • 🎖️ Certain needs related to a family member's military deployment or service

Why are we talking about it now?

Because employers have work to do before benefits begin.

If you have at least one employee working in Maryland, you are required to register for FAMLI. Payroll contributions begin January 1, 2027, and employers will begin filing quarterly wage-and-hour reports and remitting applicable contributions in April 2027.

Think of it this way:

2026 = Get Registered & Get Ready → 2027 = Contributions Begin → 2028 = Employee Benefits Begin
