Around the District with Supervisor Jimenez

Happy Thanksgiving!

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving with my family, and I hope you and your loved ones did as well. It was a great chance to slow down, catch up, and enjoy some much-needed time together before heading into a busy December.

What was Your Favorite Part About Thanksgiving This Year?

Visit to Senator Warner's Office

Mason Students Bring Holiday Cheer to the Hill

This morning, I visited Senator Warner’s office along with Mason School Board Representative Dr. Anderson, where students from Woodburn Elementary School helped decorate for the holidays. It was wonderful to see our youngest Mason District residents engage directly with government in a hands-on, festive way.

Beyond the holiday fun, visits like this give students a clear view of how local government works and the variety of roles that support our communities. They also show that elected officials are part of their own neighborhoods, helping make these connections tangible and inspiring curiosity about future career paths in public service.

Enhancing Public Safety

Hands-On Fire Training

Fairfax County Fire & Rescue conducted live-fire training on Barrett Road using homes purchased in flood-prone areas as part of the Tripps Run Flood Mitigation Project.

This unique collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services gave firefighters the most realistic hands-on experience possible while also removing homes at risk of flooding, making it a win for both public safety and

the community.

Visit to Falls Church Highschool

Seeing Student Success in Action

I toured Falls Church High School and was excited to see students and teachers high-fiving each other in the hallways—a small but meaningful sign of the strong connections in this community. I also enjoyed seeing their professional development spaces, including a fully equipped dental lab (pictured right). It’s inspiring to see how the county supports real pathways to future careers and fosters this kind of growth. Experiences like these help ensure we can keep talent in Fairfax County and give students the tools they need to succeed.

Visiting schools like Falls Church is an important part of my 2025 goal to tour every school in the district. Seeing these programs firsthand provides valuable perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing our youngest Mason District residents.

Connecting with Residents

Visit to Woodlake Towers

I recently visited Woodlake Towers, one of our district’s largest residential communities, to meet directly with residents, hear their priorities, and discuss concerns and goals for the year ahead.

These on-the-ground conversations are essential to ensuring your voices guide our work—because the best way to serve the community is to meet people where they are.

Board of Supervisors Meeting Review

Board and Committee Updates

There was no full Board meeting this week, but the past two weeks have been busy with 16 committee meetings, covering a wide range of important topics: Legislative; Transportation; Land Use Policy; Budget Policy (including a joint meeting with the School Board); Safety and Security; Economic Initiatives; Information Technology; and Environment. These discussions continue to shape policies and initiatives that impact our community every day. Committee-specific highlights can be found below.

Legislative Committee

Federal policy changes are increasing costs and responsibilities for Fairfax County, highlighting the need for strategic advocacy to protect residents and sustain essential services.

The Committee will vote on the 2026 Program on December 9, meet with the Delegation for a work session on December 16, and hold its first 2026 meeting on January 16.

Environmental Committee

The draft 2023 data shows community greenhouse gas emissions are 28% lower than in 2005, driven by major reductions in commercial (-43%) and residential (-39%) building emissions, a 10% countywide drop in electricity use since 2015, and continued improvements in vehicle efficiency.

Proposed update to the County's Public Facilities Manual to prioritize climate-resilient, mostly native tree species—using new data on shifting hardiness zones, storm-related tree loss, and species vulnerabilities—to ensure stronger, longer-lasting tree canopy.

Safety and Security Committee

Fairfax County is using opioid settlement funds to expand youth treatment, strengthen jail-based services, and grow prevention efforts, while applying for additional state funding and planning long-term investments to close critical gaps and support a comprehensive, evidence-based opioid response.

Economic Initiatives Committee:

In 2024, Fairfax County generated 20.7% of Virginia’s General Fund revenue, produced over $4.5 billion in income tax, and received more than $1 billion in K–12 support and the largest share of car tax relief in the state.

In 2024, Fairfax saw $3.9 billion in visitor spending and $305 million in state and local tax revenue—including $189 million directly for the County.

Information Technology Committee:

Starting January 1, 2026, Fairfax County will enact a 4% tax on all prepared meals and beverages sold by restaurants, caterers, and similar establishments.

Budget Policy Committee Joint Meeting with School Board:

Fairfax is facing economic uncertainty and rising costs that outpace revenue, resulting in a projected $131.5M shortfall for the County and Schools. Agencies are preparing 5% reductions as we focus resources on essential services heading into the FY 2027 budget.

Helpsy Textile Collection Bins Now at I-95 Landfill Complex

Residents can now drop off clean, odor-free textiles—including clothes, shoes, and other fabrics—at new Helpsy collection bins at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton.

Community Feedback Requested

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is studying the impact of slower speed limits on various residential roadways throughout the county in reducing speed and creating a safer environment for walking, biking, riding and driving. Invasive Species Alert

Bush Honeysuckle

Check your yard for four species of bush honeysuckles Lonicera maackii (Amur), L. morrowii (Morrow’s), L. tartarica (Tartarian), and L. X bela (Belle’s). All these bush honeysuckle species originated from Eurasia and were brought to the US during the

late 1800s.

Bush honeysuckle species grow densely, crowding out native plants and disrupting the food webs that insects and birds rely on. Serious infestations of bush honeysuckle species can inhibit tree regeneration, essentially stopping forest succession.

More information on bush honeysuckle identification and management can be
