Woburn, MA – The Massachusetts Republican State Party (MassGOP) held a committee meeting this evening to determine the process by which delegates will be awarded to Republican candidates running for President of the United States.
The Delegate Selection Committee unanimously approved the following criteria for allocating the 40 delegates who will represent Massachusetts at the July 2024 Republican National Convention:
- Delegates will be awarded on a proportional basis consistent with the March 5, 2024, Republican primary results in Massachusetts.
- A floor of 10% of the March 5, 2024 primary vote will be established for any candidate to be eligible to receive delegates.
- Any Republican candidate receiving over 50% of the primary vote on March 5, 2024, will automatically receive all 40 delegates.
- Specific delegate selections will be made as follows:
- 3 delegates and 3 alternates per Congressional District to be selected by the state chair of the respective Massachusetts Presidential campaigns or other campaign designee, in consultation with the MassGOP Chair (27 total delegates);
- 3 automatic delegates, consistent with RNC rules - State Party Chair, National Committeeman, National Committeewoman (3 delegates);
- 10 at-large delegates and alternates to be selected by the State Party Chair, after asking for submissions from members of the Republican State Committee and registered Republicans, and in consultation with the presidential campaigns (10 delegates);
- All delegates and alternates will be subject to ratification as a slate by the Republican State Committee
The committee report must be approved by the full Republican State Committee at the Committee’s next meeting to be held on September 21, 2023, before submission to the Republican National Committee.
Delegate Selection Committee Chairman Mark Townsend commented, “The committee overwhelmingly approved these recommendations, and I look forward to presenting this plan to the entire State Committee for approval in September.”
National Committeewoman Janet Fogarty said, “Our goal is to provide a fair and transparent process and this plan achieves those objectives. The plan will encourage grassroots activists wanting to be delegates to get involved with candidate campaigns.”
Party Chair Amy Carnevale, commented on the 50% threshold by stating, “This plan will reward any candidate who achieves a majority of the primary vote, recognizing that any candidate achieving this status on Super Tuesday in Massachusetts will likely be our Party’s nominee.”
