How to Read a Job Description the Right Way—So You Can Stop Sending Resumes Into the Void
|
When’s the last time you read a job description? If you’re currently job hunting, your immediate answer might be something like “last night” or “a few minutes ago.” But ask yourself: When’s the last time you really read a job posting, taking the time to absorb every word and truly reflect on the content? Your answer might be different.

What Makes this Résumé work? | |
|
This month's résumé has a lot going for it. For one, it's a two-page résumé that's loaded with accomplishment statements with quantified results. Here are other attributes of this resume:
- At the top of the résumé the candidate has a Headline that clearly tells employers the titles he goes by. This is a quick read, a snapshot of his areas of expertise.
- The Performance Profile is easy to read and not too long. Each bullet point describes a unique skill he promises to deliver to employers.
- The Performance Highlights section is a nice touch, as it immediately packs a punch and sells the candidate early on.
- The Professional Experience section is where the applicant does a stellar job of selling himself to employers. We appreciate the accomplishment statements with the quantified results in bold print.
What we don't like is that he goes back to 1991 in his work history. That information is irrelevant and subjects him to age discrimination. Instead, he could use a Previous Experience section listing the same company (NBI International) and the titles. He would also exclude the years of tenure.
