ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU A middle aged woman suffers from multiple health issues requiring multiple surgeries. She faces another surgery in the near future and wants to have her finances arranged so that she does not fall behind in her rent obligation. Because of her high level of education and past work record from when she was able bodied, she does not qualify for disability. She works part time when she is able, however, that income results in taking away the small amount of assistance she receives when unable to work. In other words, aside from struggling to stay current with her rent obligation, she does not have an opportunity to put money in reserve. With anxiety about her financial situation, this neighbor called the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449 or online https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). With your help, the assistance from the SVdP ministry gave relief to her anxiety. Further, her landlord worked out a payment plan to help her stay in good standing. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

A TIP FROM POPE FRANCIS We must identify common values based on truth. In Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis calls for “a better kind of politics, one truly at the service of the common good” (# 154). Social love, Pope Francis says, has to be “accompanied by a commitment to the truth” (# 184) informed by both faith and reason (# 185). An essential starting place for dialogue is to identify common values rooted in truth and justice, such as the dignity of the human person, or a commitment to fundamental human rights and integral human development. Identifying these common convictions can unite us despite our differences and lead to creative thinking and new solutions.

TOILETRY DONATIONS If you are traveling and staying at a hotel, consider bringing the small toiletries back to St. James so they can be distributed to those in need. Donations can be dropped off at the Cathedral Bookstore. Especially needed at the moment is suntan lotion. Thank you!

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU: A single parent with a school age son uses his truck to get to work and to take his son to school. When his truck broke down, getting it in running condition was essential. After paying for this expense, the man was laid off from his work. Waiting to see if he was eligible for unemployment, he fell short of money to pay his rent. After receiving an eviction notice, this neighbor called the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449 or online https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). Because of your participation in the SVdP ministry, we were able to pay a portion of the man’s rent. When we visited the man, he happily told us he would be able to return to work soon. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.
