SEATTLE NIGHT OUT AT TRINITY EPISCOPAL, FIRST HILL On Tuesday, August 1 St. James Cathedral joins our neighbors at Trinity Episcopal Church for a fun “Night Out,” 5:15pm-7:15pm! All First Hill residents are invited to come to 8th Avenue between James Street and Cherry Street to welcome, engage, and get to know your neighbors on First Hill.

PILGRIMAGE OF PEACE This week, our own Archbishop Paul Etienne and Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe, representing two major nuclear strongholds in the US, embark on a Pilgrimage of Peace to establish an ecclesial and personal relationship with the bishops of Japan to work toward the abolition of nuclear weapons, expressing our heartfelt sorrow for the devastating experiences endured by their nation. Join them in a Novena for Nuclear Disarmament. “Nuclear war begins, I believe, in our hearts. And that is where it must end. For that reason, deterrence is not extrinsic to the evil of nuclear war. From that moral perspective, deterrence finds itself at the center of the evil. In other words, our intention or willingness to do the sin could become the sin.”— from an address by Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen to Pax Christi USA, Chicago, July 31, 1987.

ARE YOU CALLED TO BE A CATECHIST? Do you want to share in the mission of Jesus Christ which you have experienced in the Catholic Church? Do you want to accompany young people as the Holy Spirit guides them—and you—into deeper knowledge of the truth? Then you might be called to be a catechist for Children’s Faith Formation! Materials and support provided. Please reach out to explore how you can serve our children and together with them attend to the voice of the Good Shepherd. Information, Tami Kowal, Director of Children’s Faith Formation, 206-219-5822 or tkowal@stjames-cathedral.org.

PREPARING FOR FIRST holy COMMUNION The Archdiocese of Seattle mandates a 2 year preparation period for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. This normally begins when a child starts 1st grade, and continues into 2nd grade. Some children start a year later (2nd and 3rd grades). If your child will be in 1st or 2nd grade this fall, please sign them up in August, 2023 for Sacramental Preparation beginning this September. Information, Tami Kowal, Director of Children’s Faith Formation, 206-219-5822 or tkowal@stjames-cathedral.org.

YOUTH PREPARATION FOR CONFIRMATION in 2024 The Archdiocese of Seattle changed the age of Confirmation in 2019. Candidates for Confirmation are now typically in 7th or 8th Grade. Our Confirmation program runs from September to May. If your child will be in one of these grades this fall, please sign them up in August, 2023 for classes beginning in September. CALL FOR AUCTION ITEMS Our annual dinner and auction benefiting the Cathedral Kitchen is coming up on Monday, August 28 (see flyer in this bulletin). We are now seeking items for our raffle and silent auction. Our wish list includes: Restaurant gift certificates, Gift cards valued at $25 to $50, Sporting event or theatre tickets, and bottles of wine for our wine roulette. If you have other ideas of items to donate, we would love to hear about them! All proceeds benefit the Cathedral Kitchen. Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284 or mlaughlin@stjames-cathedral.org.

CARE FOR CREATION TIP This is the last week of Plastic Free July, a campaign to eliminate plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans and beautiful communities. Consider sustainable swaps for single-use, disposable coffee cups, to improve your health and the environment. Making better, healthier cup choices helps reduce the billions of disposable coffee cups that end up as landfill and litter. Keep a reusable cup or travel mug in your car or bag or desk, and use it when the urge for coffee strikes!

HELPING FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN PrePS (Pregnancy and Parenting Support), an office of Catholic Community Service, invites you to help their Nido Familiar program. Volunteer work includes sorting donations, stocking the baby boutique, stocking diapers and wipes, and tending a community garden. Hours are Monday to Wednesday, 10am to 4:30pm. Information, Rubit Chavez, program manager, 206-584-1270 or RubitC@ccsww.org.

SANDWICH MAKING MINISTRY Healthy sandwiches can be made at home and then brought to the Cathedral to share with men staying at the St. Martin de Porres Shelter. This is a great activity for families with young children, people with busy lives, and anyone who is not able to go out and serve. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515 or pbarredo@stjames-cathedral.org.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP “We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern” (Pope Francis). Washington State’s primary election on August 1 includes state judicial offices, as well as a variety of local offices and/or measures (questions, bonds, levies, etc.). Be sure to vote and turn in your ballot by this Tuesday, August 1.

LOOKING FOR WAYS TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY? Are you interested in discovering a vibrant faith group that serves our local community in meaningful ways? Jesuit Volunteer EnCorps will support you in your commitment! We are a group, ages 40+, that meets monthly in-person. As a program of JVC Northwest, we explore our commitment to values such as social and ecological justice, community, and spirituality. Program begins in September. Apply by August 31 to be included in the opening retreat. Applications are accepted throughout the program year. Information, Karen Beal, 971-353-6946 or www.jvencorps.org.
