CARE FOR CREATION TIP OF THE WEEK Pope Francis’ follow-up to his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home was released on October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Earlier this year, he said that, “I am writing a second part to Laudato Si’ to update it on current problems,” including the devastating effects that climate change has wrought over these last few years. Guest speaker, Anisa Ralls, Director of the St. James Cathedral’s Mental Health and Wellness Ministry, will join us to speak about ways to support your child’s mental health and wellness. CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION – October 8, 2023 Today is the second class session in our Children’s Faith Formation Program. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY Monday, October 9 is celebrated as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. This day is a chance to reflect on our region’s commitment to honor the legacy and ongoing contributions of our American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. May we remember the history of the land we are privileged to live on and the people who were here long before. May we look to the future and how we can better serve our Indigenous communities and everyone who calls the Pacific Northwest their home. As a Catholic Church, we also remember that earlier this year, nearly 500 years after papal decrees were used to rationalize Europe’s colonial conquests, the Vatican repudiated those decrees, saying the “Doctrine of Discovery” that was used to justify snuffing out Indigenous people’s culture and livelihoods is not part of the Catholic faith. May we, as the Church, stand with Indigenous peoples now and strongly support the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which helps protect Indigenous rights as well as improving living conditions and development “in a way that respects their identity, language and culture.”
BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE As we prepare for All Souls on November 2, a book of remembrance has been placed near the Mary Shrine. Please record the names of deceased loved ones. This book of remembrance will be carried in procession at the solemn Requiem Mass of All Souls.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU We visited a young man who co-parented his young child. He told us of the difficult childhood he experienced and the challenges he had overcome. He valued his young daughter and strived to create a stable home for her. When he lost his job, he fell behind in paying rent. This neighbor called the St Vincent de Paul Helpline requesting assistance (206-767-6449 or online https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). Thanks to your help, we were able to help him meet the current month’s rent. The man was grateful and expressed hope about a job he had interviewed for. OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH There are many ways to commemorate this important month! PrePS (Pregnancy and Parenting Support), an office of Catholic Community Service, invites you to help their Nido Familiar program. Volunteer work includes sorting donations, stocking the baby boutique, stocking diapers and wipes, and tending a community garden. Hours are Monday to Wednesday, 10am to 4:30pm. WEEKLY MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS GROUPS Every Friday of the month, 10-11:30am the Mental Health and Wellness Ministry will be having different groups for mental health support, including art, board games, a mental health support group, mindfulness, yoga, and prayer, and a movie. BYRD ENSEMBLE CONCERT Saturday, October 21 at 8:00pm – Muhly Meets Byrd. Opening the Byrd Ensemble’s 20th Anniversary season and to honor 400 years since the death of their namesake, William Byrd, this program features a world premiere commissioned by the ensemble. The new work, by American composer Nico Muhly, is based on Byrd’s motet, Ne irascaris, Domine and will be conducted by Muhly himself. The program also features other favorites by Byrd and his contemporaries and will conclude with a performance of Tallis’s monumental 40-part motet, Spem in alium. VISIT THE CATHEDRAL BOOKSTORE Located off the Archbishop Murphy Courtyard on the south side of the Cathedral, the Cathedral Bookstore is open weekdays 11-3 and after each weekend Mass. The Bookstore offers a wide variety of items that express the spirit of St. James Cathedral parish: Catholic books for children and adults—history, spirituality, theology, and more; gift items and religious articles like rosaries and saints’ medals; Cathedral souvenirs, including postcards, notecards, books, magnets, keychains, and more. FAITH FRIENDS INCLUSION MINISTRY Faith Friends is an inclusion ministry serving children and teens from across the Archdiocese of Seattle. We are a unique blend of our Faith Mentor and Children’s Faith Formation program, and provide Sacramental Preparation, as well as opportunities for friendship with other youth. TEEN, YOUNG ADULT AND ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FAITH FRIENDS MINISTRY Faith Friends is a unique blend of our Faith Mentor, children’s faith formation program, and an inclusion ministry. The ministry's goal is to give children and teens ages 7- 18 with physical, cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities access to the parish community, social events, and faith formation. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Faith Friends program is the Faith Peer program. Faith Peers are teens and young adults who have chosen to live out their discipleship and share some of their personal time in dedication and service to the goals of the program.
