Post-Election Remarks

Father Ryan shared these thoughts before all Masses this past weekend. They are included here in case you missed them.

My friends, before we begin Mass, I feel the need to say something about the events of this past week.

We have been through a long and bruising election season unlike any of us can remember. Some are elated about the outcome; others are heartbroken. And we bring all of that along with us to Mass this weekend.

And even though our feelings about the outcome of the election may be very different, nevertheless, there is still so much that unites us. We wouldn’t be here if that weren’t case. We are sisters and brothers, part of the same Church, part of the Body of Christ, part of this wonderful community of faith. We need to keep that in mind going forward.

And we need to pray, pray earnestly and honestly, pray for our President-elect and for all newly elected officials, pray from our joy, pray from our pain, pray with confidence to the God who loves each of us beyond measure; pray to the God for whom the differences that - to us – may seem insurmountable are really quite inconsequential when viewed against the great backdrop of God’s plan for the human family. God’s plan is for us to love one another; to build communities of love; to embrace the voiceless and the vulnerable; to work for a better world where all are valued, accepted, and loved. No matter how the future unfolds, we must never forget God’s plan, never compromise those core beliefs.

And, my friends, no matter what our politics may be, I believe that these are things we can all agree on as believers, things we can work together to bring about. It’s what we have been doing for a long time at St. James Cathedral, and I am confident that we will continue that great work together!

May our prayer today be a step in that direction. May it begin to bring about healing, mutual understanding, reconciliation, and peace.

Let me conclude with words Abraham Lincoln spoke so long ago at his first inaugural, a moment in history when our nation was every bit as polarized as it is today:

“We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory…will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched…by the better angels of our nature.”

May it be so!

Mother Cabrini's feast day 11/13

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini,

in the name of Christ

you ministered to those most in need:

the orphan, the immigrant,

the sick, the poor, the imprisoned.

You saw Christ in them;

and they met Christ in you.

Pray for us, that we may have eyes and hearts

to see and respond to the needs of our own time.

Pray for us, that we may welcome the stranger as you did,

with compassion and generosity. Amen.

VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open. It is a beautiful place to visit and pray for all our beloved dead. Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION WEEKLY EMAILS are sent out to registered families in the program each Thursday with the subject heading, “CFF Thursday Tidings.” If after you check your junk e-mail folder, you are not receiving these informative weekly e-mails, contact Tami Kowal, tkowal@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-219-5822.

This year’s Sock Drive has a goal of collecting 2,025 pairs of men’s athletic socks. Lastly, don’t forget about this year’s Advent Bazaar, with Cathedral parishioners and friends selling their artwork and homemade goods. It will be on Sunday, December 8, 9am to 12pm in Cathedral Hall, and new this year is the St. James Night Market after the Sunday 5:30pm Mass!

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU This older immigrant man suffered a heart attack and was in the hospital for 3 months. During that time, he fell into a coma and missed his Social Security review. His disability payments were finally reinstated, but he won’t be getting a check for several months and is now facing eviction. He called the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449 or apply online https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/) He came to the US as a refuge in the 1990s and is very grateful for the opportunity, stating “America is the greatest country.” Thanks to you, the SVdP ministry was able to help with his rent. Information, Blake Steller 907-244-6683 or blsteller@gmail.com.

FAITH FRIENDS is a blend of our original Faith Mentor faith formation program, which we began in 2014, and a new adaptive catechesis program. The program’s goal is to give children and teens ages 7-17 with learning differences , physical, cognitive and/or intellectual disabilities access to parish community, social events and faith formation. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Faith Friends program is the Faith Mentor/Faith Peer program. Faith Mentors are youth and Faith Peers are young adults who have chosen to live out their discipleship and share some of their personal time in dedication and service to the goals of the program. After completing an intake process and training, these Faith Mentors volunteer at various monthly Faith Friend meetings and other group activities Faith Peers can also serve as a Faith Mentor by being paired with a Faith Friend.
