Mass for Peace 8/9 at 12:10pm

On Friday, August 9, 2024 at 12:10pm, join Archbishop Etienne and Catholics in our region at the first annual Mass for Peace.

On the anniversary of the atomic bombing in Nagasaki, Archbishop Paul D. Etienne, in partnership with the bishops of Japan and the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, invites all Catholics to pause and pray for peace. Reflecting on this day in history, reminds us to continue peace efforts today so that the pain and atrocities inflicted on God’s creation may end.

SUPPORT THE SOLANUS CASEY CENTER Named after Franciscan Capuchin priest Solanus Casey, the Center (a joint ministry of Catholic Community Services and St. James Cathedral) is a walk-in referral center that provides services to the unemployed, working poor, people just released from detention, and those living on the streets, shelters, and transitional housing. The Center also offers modest financial assistance as funds allow. It is one of the few agencies in Seattle that will help pay for ID cards and provide assistance with necessary background paperwork. New hours for the Center are Monday to Thursday, 12pm to 3pm. To volunteer, Adriana Henry, Program Manager, 206-223-0907 or AdrianaH@ccsww.org.

A TIP FROM POPE FRANCIS: WE MUST COMMIT TO APPROACHING OTHERS WITH LOVE In Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis calls for “a better kind of politics, one truly at the service of the common good” (154). Even those with whom we disagree are children of God. Sadly, such an approach has become countercultural. We have become used to efforts aimed more to “discredit and insult opponents from the outset than to open a respectful dialogue aimed at achieving agreement on a deeper level” (201). This is a situation in which we must be prophetic, modeling by example a respectful approach that honors others as made in God’s image. This involves stepping outside ourselves, listening with empathy, and seeking to truly understand another person’s experience.

TOILETRY DONATIONS If you are traveling and staying at a hotel, bring the small toiletries back to St. James so they can be distributed to those in need. Donations can be dropped at the Cathedral Bookstore.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU: A single parent with a school age son uses his truck to get to work and to take his son to school. When his truck broke down, getting it in running condition was essential. After paying for this expense, the man was laid off from his work. Waiting to see if he was eligible for unemployment, he fell short of money to pay his rent. After receiving an eviction notice, this neighbor called the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449 or online https://svdpseattle.org/get-help/online-help-request-form/). Because of your participation in the SVdP ministry, we were able to pay a portion of the man’s rent. When we visited the man, he happily told us he would be able to return to work soon. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.
