How, Where and When to Plant Trees
|
|
Fall is the best time to plant trees. It gives them all winter to grow a better root system than any other time of the year.
Dig a big hole for the tree to expand its roots into.
Don't plant deeper that what is in the pot, unless a few roots are showing.
Don't plant tall trees or shrubs under power lines.
Keep the tree watered over the winter if we have a dry winter. A five gallon pail of water with some holes drilled in the bottom works great.
Feed in the springtime.

Where to Find Color Foliage in Missouri
|
|
Find best places to see fall foliage with MDC’s fall color forecast by Missouri Dept of Conservation: Missouri is blessed with a variety of trees, shrubs, and vines that make the fall season come alive with color.
You can find best places to view the changing foliage using the MDC fall color report... updated weekly from MDC foresters all over the state... Leaves change color at different times, so a fall color season in Missouri may last four-to-six weeks.
Missouri trees first begin changing color in the northern part of the state, then move southward. The updates run September through November.

Noxious Weed or Invasive Species
|
|
What's the difference between Missouri's noxious weeds and invasive species?
Noxious weed - A plant species that has been officially placed on the “Noxious Weed List” and is regulated by state statute.
Invasive species - A species that is not native to the area and causes harm. Learn more below about each:
Missouri Noxious Weed Control: The State of Missouri has designated twelve weed species noxious. Enforcement of Missouri's noxious weed statutes is handled by the county prosecutor. To view the complete list of Missouri's noxious weeds, learn about weed control or to view the Noxious Weed Statutes, please refer to the additional links found here.
Missouri Invasive Plants List: Invasive nonnative plants consume wildlife habitat and compete with crops. Some invasive species, such as Callery pear, are still being grown, promoted, sold, and purchased. There is more than one Invasive Plant list, start here. --PLUS-- and here.
'Invasive Plants are Still for Sale as Garden Ornamentals, Research Shows' by National Invasive Species Information Center - What's New from USDA NISIC Aug 25, 2021: The study, “Invaders for sale: the ongoing spread of invasive species by the plant trade industry,” published in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, shows that existing regulatory and ethical guidelines do not serve to limit the widespread introduction of invasive plants and that more than 60% of the 1,285 plants identified as invasive remain for sale. Get Your Soil Tested Now
Before You Put Your Garden to Bed for the Winter
|
|
Basic soil testing analysis is done by the MU Soil Lab in partnership with our Master Gardeners of Greene County. Results include fertilizer and lime recommendations. Additional tests are available for nutrient management plans, environmental issues, potting mixes, compost, manure and water usage. Each sample should contain a total of 2 cups of dry soil and from 6 to 7 inches deep and about 5 or 6 different areas. Results are typically provided within two weeks.
We recommend bringing the soil sample(s) to our office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursdays. Master Gardeners can complete the paperwork and submit your test. One of our extension specialists will review your results. In most cases, gardens, lawns and fields should be tested every two years.
The cost is $30 per sample. Feel free to call if you have any questions.
