June 2021 Newsletter
Hello All,

Summer’s finally caught up with us here in Fairfield, signaling time for Annabelle’s annual clipping ritual. I posted the embarrassing event last year on my Facebook page with the caption, “Again I was reminded why my trainer Val Lowe never asked me to clip the show horses when I was grooming.”
Annabelle and I got a little more creative this year with the invention of the Annabelle-Masterson Summer Driving Clip. I’ve gotten a little less clumsy with the clippers, she’s gotten a little more patient, and this is what we came up with:
It’s been a very nice summer so far; not too hot for too long, with even some cool evenings. I never thought when I moved to Iowa that I’d end up living in a Grant Wood's painting.
On The Masterson Method front most of my time has been spent keeping up with all that’s going on out there in the real world. A lot is going on out there as we add seminars and courses to the calendar faster than ever (see below for listings).
Masterson Method Mobile Response Team – On the Road Again

Lynn Griffin, Judy Askins and the MMMRT are on the road again in California and sent us a couple of (nice) stories to share. Spoiler alert… have a Kleenex ready.
Podcasts

I know the weather’s improving and people are starting to get out more, but if you do find yourself driving, riding or just having “quiet time” home alone (again) you might find these podcasts enjoyable, interesting and/or relaxing.

We have more dedicated students who have graduated as Masterson Method Certified Practitioners in Europe and the UK. Congratulations all!
Vicky and her "new MMCP crew" from the UK
Walter and new European MMCP's
More Seminars are scheduled in Germany, elsewhere in the UK, France, Israel, the Netherlands and Austria. South of the Equator we have Seminars in September (Spring!) in Johannesburg, South Africa and Christchurch, New Zealand.
I know a lot of you have been asking about when courses will be starting up again in Australia.
We haven’t forgotten you! We’re on it! So stay tuned… keep the faith… hang in there… we’ll be there soon!
Back Home

Natural Balance Dentist, Gretchen Deane, swung by to do some teeth this month. Gretchen’s also a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner. Natural Balance-Neuromuscular dentistry connects teeth to the body; and Gretchen combines dental work with bodywork, which works surprisingly well! And of course, the horses love it.
In two weeks I’ll be making another road trip to California to work with horses, certify students, and finish up with clinics with Mark Rashid and Dr. Stephen Peters at Happy Dog Ranch in Littleton Colorado. We combine our three perspectives on the horse with Dr. Peters’ presentation and brain dissection. Stephen brings the brains to the outfit. Mark and I are the other two guys. You can find out about these clinics here:
2021 United States Pony Club Festival and
National Championships in Lexington

On July 25th and 26th I’ll be joining Pony Club Trainers and MMCP’s Mimi Duffy and David Ospital for demonstrations along with their Pony Club students at the 2021 Pony Club Festival at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Thousands of Pony Club members show up with their ponies at the Festival and the USPC National Championship where riders compete in seven disciplines: Dressage, Eventing, Show Jumping, Games, Polocrosse, Tetrathlon, and Quiz (a non-riding, knowledge-based competition).

David, Mimi and their students will be assisting me at the demonstrations.

You can see a short video clip of a past Festival here. Fun!
Equitana USA 2021 in Lexington

International Equitana Horse Expo is coming to the U.S. for the first time, in October 2021. Since they let me in at numerous other Equitanas in the past and I didn’t do too much damage, they’re letting me in again to present at this one on October 1-3.

Rather than just talking with a horse in-hand I’ll be doing longer, whole horse demonstrations… and talking. The Equitanas I’ve been to in the past in Australia and Germany have been very professional events, and again at this one I’ll be in the company of a pretty impressive list of educational presenters who I’m hoping will make me look good. I’m looking forward to this first one in the U.S.
Best Horse Practices Summit in Lexington

October 29-31 I’ll be presenting at the Best Horse Practices Summit in Lexington along with Warwick Schiller, Dr. Cheryl King, Wade Black, Dr. Martin Nielsen and a bunch of other really smart people. If I don’t say too much I might appear pretty smart myself. Looking forward to that!

So there’s a lot going on in Lexington; enough to keep us all out of the house for a while.

As there’s so much education lined up for us this fall, I’d like to end this newsletter with a short educational clip on horse training… or rather pony training… or rather mini training. You should never confuse a mini with a pony... or a horse. Enjoy!

And until next time,

Like me, enjoy your horses… ponies… minis.

Necessity created opportunity. My horse was on stall rest and I wanted to help him. Not content to stand idly by, I searched the internet for horse massage, and discovered The Masterson Method®. I was instantly drawn in and began my journey to becoming a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner.

The Masterson Method® applies to all disciplines, levels, and breeds. Whether as a standalone therapy, or as a complement to my work as a personalized horse trainer, the Masterson Method helps my clients develop lasting connections and better performance.

Louise Snellman
Lund, Sweden

Louise grew up in Lund, Sweden and has had horses as her best friends since childhood. She got her first horse when she was 14 and learned Equine Sports Massage in the 1980’s, inspired by Jack Meagher with mostly firm and deep pressure techniques.

Her love for just and ethical welfare for horses led her to explore other modalities. Her goal was to find methods to relieve pain and discomfort for these hard working and always kind and cooperative animals. She discovered Masterson Method® while searching the internet and found that she could complete her hands-on courses in the UK countryside. She has been a certified practitioner since 2015 and she is also a trauma therapist. The less is more approach of The Masterson Method® harmonizes beautifully with her philosophies and her love of working with horses.

During lock-downs and times of restrictions she has been offering sessions through zoom which has widened the possibility to connect with horse owners and spread comfort and benefits for horses.

Louise currently rides her two Swedish Warmbloods, happily living on a free range pasture.

Shanell Thomas
Clinton, Illinois

Shanell Thomas is the owner of Optimized Equine Wellness LLC. A lifelong horsewoman, she began her riding and showing career at the age of seven. Often when other kids were having sleepovers or attending parties Shanell chose to read her equine medical books instead. A huge collection of Breyer model horses and hundreds of equine training and medical books later she opened a training and riding lesson business as an adult.

Over the years Shanell developed a love for not just working horses but a deep satisfaction in working with rescue and rehabilitation horses which she often found were labeled 'bad' or 'stubborn' as a result of trauma or discomfort. In order to help projects and rescues maintain optimum well-being and balance, Shanell began to study equine nutrition (cert. 2012), Masterson Method ® (cert. 2021), Kinesiology taping, and other holistic therapies. She believes strongly in building a horse/human connection, and utilizing The Masterson Method® is the most powerful way she has experienced to achieve this. Helping horses to release stress and pain using a non-invasive and pressure sensitive method.

Through Optimized Equine Wellness, Shanell brings her strong knowledge and training to the horse and its team of owner, trainer, farrier, veterinarian and other equine professionals. She is available to offer bodywork services & demonstrations at equine events throughout Illinois and the surrounding states.

Deanna Keeton
Albia, Iowa

I was raised on a small cattle farm that still works cattle with horses and grew up riding daily. I was riding horses before I could walk and really grew up loving the horse. I have been a long time barrel racer and 3rd generation rodeo athlete. I first started competing in youth rodeos and continued through high school and now as an adult. As my love for horses grew I became interested in training horses as well. I now start colts and train barrel horses for myself and the public. I love the competition and the rush from growing with a horse you have trained yourself.

I have used The Masterson Method® for the past 10 years. For years it has helped my horses stay feeling their best. Recently, I had a horse with lots of performance issues and Masterson sessions made amazing changes in my horse, seeing my horse go from a pained horse with severe gate issues to a consistent calm pleasurable horse changed my life in more ways then one and I decided to begin the process of becoming certified myself. Having the knowledge of Masterson helped my horses stay feeling and performing their best and I’m excited to spread my knowledge with my community.
