The Masterson Method ®
Monthly eNewsletter - April 2019
Hello All,

Just got back from beautiful Blue Dot Farm in Nicasio Valley California where we held a Weekend Seminar, and our second Mark and Jim collaborative clinic at this farm. It was very educational (as usual) with good riders and interesting issues . Thank you Crissi McDonald for taking another batch of great photos! You’ll see some photos of the clinic here, and if you’ve been following Facebook and Instagram, and any of those other foreign social languages, then you will have seen more images from last week. Thanks to Blue Dot, Mark and Crissi, and MMCP Dianne Adel for organizing, and following up on horses there.
Re-connecting with Whisper
One thing I was looking forward to at Nicasio was seeing Whisper and her owner Addie again. Whisper is a thoroughbred jumper who I worked on last year at this clinic. Addie was looking for something that would help Whisper relax in between her “up” moments. Being a thoroughbred, Whisper’s approach to just about anything can be just a little bit on the high side. This can be a good characteristic, but Addie felt that there was something uncomfortable in Whisper that always kept her at an unnatural level of alertness. It turns out that there was something - an old injury, accident or incident – that had caused her thorax to become torqued, twisted, or “jammed”. The results during the bodywork last year were pretty dramatic ( see video and full story), and Addie reports that Whisper since then is a changed horse. She still gets “up” when she’s “up”, but in between Addie feels she is relaxed and comfortable and has openings now that allow Addie to connect with her and that allow them to work together without the heightened level of alertness that was a constant before.

Working on Whisper this year was indeed a different experience than last year. Last year: Suspicious! This year: I love ya’ dude!
Mark and I will be doing more of these collaborative clinics where we work with the horse’s mind and body right after the brain clinic at Happy Dog Ranch in Littleton, CO in July. There is still room for auditors from Monday through Thursday or Friday. It’s well worth the sit in the sun… or the rain… or the shade!

AND, Mark and I will be in the UK at the same time in October, and so have scheduled a Considering the Horse – Mind and Body collaborative clinic in Cambridgeshire on 15, 16 and 17. It’s been a while since Mark has been over there, and so will have to brush up on his English.
See all collaborative clinics on the course list below.
UK
I will be back in May for Weekend Seminars in Warwickshire and Salisbury, and two Advanced Courses in Salisbury. One of these Advanced Courses has some spots left for you to fill. Now’s your chance! I’ll also be certifying a large bundle… herd… group (?) of MMCP’s while there so, Congratulations!

We also have Weekend Seminars coming up in Poland (in Polish), in Netherlands (in Dutch), in Belgium (in Flemish?), in Israel (in Hebrew), in Scotland (in Yorkish : ), in Australia (in ‘stralyin), in Austria, S. Africa and Canada. We even have some in the U.S. (those are taught in American, sorry ; ) See Calendar below for all dates.

Our First EU/UK MMCP Educational Conference arrives in Gloucestershire in May!
My goals for this conference are:
1) Education
2) Networking, and
3) Fun!

The educational focus at these conferences is always on practical knowledge that improves our effectiveness in helping our clients and their horses.

Richard Maxwell, Stefan Hamm, and I will be covering groundwork, saddle fit and bodywork.

We will also talk about how to integrate what we’re presenting, on a practical level as MMCPs.

And we’ll have fish and chips and maybe a beer or two… or lamb and mint sauce and maybe a nice cabernet… I’m excited about this and about having all of us in one place together. Registration for the conference is now open to MMCPs and Field Work students from both GB, Ireland, and the Continent! See details below!
Walter Saxe in Germany had an interesting and impactful experience at a recent Weekend Seminar in Germany. He tells us about it below. You may be able relate to this through some of your experiences with MM.

Equine Assisted Therapies and MMES are growing here in the U.S., and we’re hoping to soon be coming to EU/UK.

I’ll be at the Minnesota Horse Expo on April 26th to 28 th, and the Western States Horse Expo at their new location at Rancho Murrieta, CA on May 9 th to 12 th.

If you can’t make one of these and are not into travelling long distances you may find The Masterson Method being demonstrated by one of our MMCPs closer to you on our Calendar page under Horse Expos and Demos. Give it a look.

In the meantime, like me,
Enjoy your horses!
Jim

Aßlar, Germany Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar
Our German Instructor Walter Saxe shared from the Aßlar Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar:

"Aßlar is always worth a visit.
The 2nd Masterson Method weekend course of this year took place on the Mühlenberghof, the grounds of Stephan and Silivia Hamm. As always we had "cream weather" 😍

Thirteen highly committed horse people (even from Switzerland and Paris they arrived) wanted to learn the basic techniques and did that really well, which could be seen in the many solution reactions of the horses.
This time I had male reinforcement from Bruno and Oliver-Yeaah😀.
Silvi had not only enough horses ready for her team and the great stable community, but also her equipment and our food very well organized. By the way, she also assisted with Alexandra Feix. Simone, who is just beginning her training as a therapist, has also taken the time to help. Thank you all for the help and support.
We had a very special experience! It can sometimes happen that very old and often emotional trauma in horses by The Masterson Method dissolves. That happened with Spirit.

At first the Pinto allowed the techniques to be quite stoic, but then the dams broke. On Saturday, he showed violent yawning attacks, on Sunday he reacted first as sedated, then for almost an hour in the middle of the study group on the place to lay down and completely relax. It is simply phenomenal which physical as well as mental effect the 13 basic techniques can do.
It was great with you. Thanks to the horse owners for their trust.
Iris, Beate, Brigitte, Elke, Bruno, Saskia, Gudrun and Gudrun, Katarina, Monika, Oliver, Stephanie and Shannon - nice that you were there. bye for now.

Masterson Method, to love the horses."
"Carefully alert!"

MMES Demo at MN Horse Expo
We’ve added a demo to Jim’s busy schedule at the Minnesota Horse Expo specifically on using The Masterson Method in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. If you’re following  Jim at the MN Horse Expo , join us Sunday morning at 10am in the Swine Barn!

About MMES
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It's a win/win!

Lucie Klaassen introducing Masterson Method in Balanced Rider & Horse clinics in Australia!
Masterson Method instructor Lucie Klaassen from the Netherlands is doing a 9 week tour through Australia teaching her 3-day Balanced Rider & Horse clinic in several states throughout the whole country.
Lucie teaching the importance of spinal alignment for balance, energy and freedom of movement from back to front.
Lucie is also a Squire in the Academic Art or Riding and a certified instructor in Straightness Training, Centered Riding and Freestyle. She always includes The Masterson Method into her work as she believes in the combination of training and bodywork. If the spine can not move freely during the training, the energy can not flow from back to front and the movement will be restricted. By teaching her students a few simple and practical Masterson techniques (TMJ, sacrum float, UTP and lateral rocking) they learn how to release tension along the spinal column so the horse will find more freedom of movement in the training.
Participant releasing tension in TMJ of the horse (and herself..)
Lucie is also helping Jim to fulfill his mission that every horse will experience the Bladder Meridian at least once in its life. During her tour more than 85 horses have had the pleasure of finding relaxation and releasing tension while participants learned to follow the bladder meridian.
Lucie showing the Bladder Meridian Technique.
In Melbourne, Masterson instructor Pam Martin joined the clinic of Lucie Klaassen. Pam is available to travel within Australia to teach the 2 day Masterson Method course for people in Australia who want to learn more.

Kat Davies
Custer, SD

Kat has never known a day without horses in fact her first ride on a horse was before she was actually born. The next eighteen years were spent barrel racing, adventuring on horseback and studying with other trainers. She got her degree in vet tech before making a career switch to horse trainer. After seeing the effects of The Masterson Method she realized just how much we can give our horses and how much they can give back. And so Kat made another career switch from horse trainer to equine body-worker and consultant. Having learned so much at their side, it has become Kat’s goal to build a mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy horse. And for her Masterson Method aids this goal beautifully.

Peggy intends to combine the equine bodywork with her background as a physical therapist for the rider to create a more balanced team.
