The Masterson Method ®
Monthly eNewsletter - August 2018
Hello All,

Have had a nice month at home to catch up on things, so not a lot of news travel-wise to talk about this month. We’ve had a typical summer (well, for the month I’ve been here), with maybe just a few more cooler, crisper mornings to wake up to than usual; and with fewer, kinder, gentler bugs in the evening. No complaints there.
It’s nice to be able to sit on the back porch and watch the sun go down without an industrial fan and a baseball bat. Well, it’s usually not that bad, but it seems it’s been better this year. This is one thing we talk about a lot in the mid-west. The weather.
Speaking of seasons, this Spring we initiated a Masterson Method Demo Program with our Masterson Method Certified Practitioners. I like this program because it gives our talented MMCPs an opportunity to share their knowledge and showcase their skills, and it gives interested horse-people a look at what they can learn to do for their own horses. One thing that always comes up when I’m talking with MMCPs is their desire to share their knowledge with their clients and show them specific things they can do with their own horses to keep them happy and sound between MM visits. These demos give them another opportunity to do that.
Laurel Watson in Ocala, FL leads the pack having done or scheduled five demonstrations in her area.

So far, this program has been a success with over 25 demos scheduled by MMCPs since June for various groups and events. Future Masterson Method Demos will be posted on our Calendar page, and below in this newsletter. If you’re interested keep an eye on this, and if there is an MMCP in your area (hit “ Find a Practitioner” button on the website ; ) and if you’d like to set up a demonstration near you, contact an MMCP or the office at and we’ll see if we can set one up.
No, this is not a bodywork Technique, but it is a pretty cool trick. Dwayne’s the one standing next to the box. His turn is next : )
Back on the Road
On August 22 nd I head out to Watsonville, CA for four days of Certification Completion Course training. Twelve Students have completed their Fieldwork Course and are ready to become full-fledged MMCPs. Congratulations to them! They’ve earned it. And now all they have to do is spend a few more days of listening to bad jokes from me. Well, that’s not ALL they have to do, but they’re getting close to the finish line.
England and Europe
Three more weeks at home (I like being here in the Fall) then off to the UK for three weeks of Fall there. Each Spring and Fall in the UK we schedule two Weekend Seminars, two Advanced 5-Day Courses, and a Certification Completion Course for Advanced Students who’ve been in Field Work for the year. We have spaces for students on the Weekend Seminar in Hertfordshire on 6 and 7 of October .

If you’ve attended a Weekend Seminar before and have an interest in becoming certified, or an interest in learning more and just becoming better, we have spaces left for Advanced Students on the Advanced 5-Day Course in Oxfordshire on October 8 through 12 . This location is an easy drive or train ride from Luton, for European students.

This Advanced Course is the next step toward Certification after the Weekend Seminar Workshop, however it’s not exclusively for Certification. Anyone who has done a hands-on Weekend Seminar and is interested in learning more can take the Advanced 5-Day Course . In addition to learning and practicing new Techniques, I teach Advanced students my evaluation techniques. One of the main reasons we learn to evaluate what the horse’s body is telling us, is to track down what’s causing what we’re finding in the body. All of the tension we’re finding in the horse’s body is caused by something - is secondary to some other, primary issue. (Or issues - “It’s almost always never just one thing.”) The patterns of tension we find can help us track down what the primary issue (or issues) might be. If we can help the owner find and remedy the primary issues then the secondary tension won’t return.

So, whether you’re interested in adding to your toolbox or are interested in Certification, I want to see you on one of those courses. You know who you are! I’m watching! (Not stalking, just watching…)
Come one, come all. Large and small.
Don’t worry. The weather is (almost) ALWAYS like this in England.
Masterson Method going multi-lingual!
As Mark Rashid would say, “We’re now going multi-bi-lingual!”

We now have Weekend Seminars that will be taught in Germany , Belgium , Poland and Israel by Instructors in their native languages. Check the Course Calendar below for those courses this Fall.

Also, in Germany in March will be our first Advanced 5-Day Course taught in Germany , to be taught in English and German.
Australia, South Africa and Beyond
Also, below you’ll find our schedule for Seminars and Courses in South Africa, Australia, Canada, and even the good ole’ US of A. I won’t be getting to South Africa this winter/summer but Masterson Method Instructors Rob and Chantal Holder will be keeping things running and will be teaching their next Weekend Seminar Workshop in Midrand near Jo-burg in October. I had a good time there in January and am hoping to get back next year. In the meantime, Go Rob and Chantal!
In November I’ll be presenting at Equitana in Melbourne and will be doing Weekend Seminars in Victoria and SA, and an Advanced 5-Day Course at the Australian College of Equine Podiatry in Yarck in VIC. As I explained above, although the Advanced Course is the next step after the Weekend Seminar toward Certification, Certification isn’t necessarily the goal. Knowledge and skill in bodywork are the goals. So whether you’re interested in Certification or not, go!
Back home
Finally back home, this last week was the first time in a while I’ve been able to hook up Annabelle to the buggy for a drive. She’s had a year-long bout with laminitis but with the expert, long-distance advice of Andrew and Nicky Bowe at the Australian College of Equine Podiatry she’s back on her feet and she, her brother Jeremiah, and I are able to go out for an evening drive, and maybe soon down to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning for coffee, or the Cider House in the evening for a… cider ; )
She’s the one on the left with the red ribbons and the sensible gait.
And Jeremiah won’t have to go out on his own anymore!

Talk to you again next month.
Until then, like me,
Enjoy your horses!
Masterson Method student, Chelsea Gertenbach, who is currently busy with her fieldwork, has made the South African Team participating at the World Equestrian Games in September in the discipline Vaulting!

Great job Chelsea!
Hosting a Weekend Seminar
Happy summer 2018 to you, our valued Masterson Newsletter connoisseur!
In case you didn’t get a chance to meet me at our Educational Conference in February, my name is Tamara Kulow, and I arrange our weekend seminar-workshops, among other things, as well as collaborate with the rest of the Masterson team to ensure students achieve the highest possible success when learning these exceptional bodywork techniques.
Right now we are striving to schedule weekend clinics for the winter/spring season, and since our research has shown that “word-of-mouth” is our number one form of sharing, I thought I’d reach out for your assistance.
We’re looking for good hosts to fill November through February slots on our calendar, either outdoors (in warmer climates), or inside heated arenas (in the colder regions).
We offer a free spot in the course for hosting - tuition value of $495 - quite a lucrative offer for learning these remarkably effective techniques. Horses used in these weekends also seem to trot away with a big smile… 😊
Anyway, please contact me or at my direct Masterson tele: 641-209-6468 if you or a friend are interested. See more details and the Host Application on our website .
We love having these weekends – they are such an integral step in fulfilling Jim’s vision of “having every horse on the planet experience the Masterson Method”- and I would love if we could make this our best winter season ever!

With much appreciation and warm regards,
World Equestrian Games Extra Passes

New Certified Practitioners
Alison Zaoui
Hertfordshire, UK

Alison currently works with horses and their humans through equine MM, Reiki and Kinesiology Taping, and human Reiki Reflexology, Taping and Indian Head Massage. She is hoping to include dogs into the mix in the not too far future.
She has been around horses since age 5 and is trained in natural horsemanship, helping her to be very calm and quiet around them, she believes that horses have so much to teach us if we just listen to them.
Alison is really looking forward to continuing her journey of learning, next up for her is Equine back health and function plus effects of saddle and rider on the horse and its performance.
She is based in Hertfordshire and covers Herts, Bedfordshire and anything in-between. Happy to travel just give her a ring.

Lucinda Grimshaw
Liskeard, UK

Lucinda’s career with horses began at 16 years of age, with an Apprenticeship at a local Equestrian Centre where she stayed for a further three years gaining her BHS qualifications and a wealth of teaching experience. From that point, Lucinda worked within the Equine industry for a further six years mainly with Mounted Games Ponies, Hunters and Eventers. This is where Lucinda first witnessed Equine Bodywork and was immediately drawn to it. As much as Lucinda wanted to pursue this role, it did not seem financially viable and fell into the trap of office work! Continuing to ride and visit local shows and events, however the self-perpetuating nonsense of office life began to wear Lucinda down. This continued until Lucinda moved with her husband and two children to Cornwall for a better quality of life. It was at this point that Lucinda’s career turned full circle and she signed up for a Foundation Degree in Equitation Science at Duchy College, covering Equine Training, Behaviour and Welfare. Lucinda’s interest in helping horses through bodywork still remained and during work experience at college she met Leigh Jackson (a Masterson Method Coach) who took Lucinda under her wing. Lucinda continued with her Degree; graduating in November 2017 and went on to become a Certified Masterson Method Practitioner in May 2018.
Lucinda believes that the learning outcomes and experiences from the Foundation Degree and The Masterson Method Certification have reinforced the importance of looking at the horse holistically; and respecting each horse as an individual. It is not about working on a restricted area of the body, it’s about understanding how the horse uses its whole body, how it balances itself, if it compensates for areas of tension, it’s job, it’s age and how capable the horse is to carry out their job in terms of confirmation and personality. Lucinda enjoys keeping up to date with the Equine Industry and will continue to develop her understanding of everything Equine.
