The Masterson Method ®
Monthly eNewsletter - February 2018
Hello All,

My head’s still reeling from our first Masterson Method Educational Conference in Tucson, AZ last week. Our goals for the conference were Education, Networking and Fun. And what a success it was! Let me give you a rundown on the Conference, then I'll get to the South African courses I taught in January.

MMCP Educational Conference

We had 80 or so accommodations booked at the White Stallion Ranch in Tucson for the two-and-a-half-day event, and they all filled (whew!). We’ve never done this before and so were relieved when it was clear it would fill early on. We had three main presentations by experts in their fields. Well, partly indoors and partly in the arena. Not really in the field. These were:

1) Trainer Mark Rashid presenting on two topics;
Inner Softness as it applies to doing bodywork
and Bio Mechanics - identifying asymmetries in movement in the horse.
2) Jerry Schmidt on Teeth, Feet and the Body – how the feet and teeth work together with the body, with practical techniques to identify when dental issues may be affecting the body.
3) Jochen Schleese did a classroom and practical presentation on key points of saddle fitting, from his course Saddlefit 4 Life® program.
We also had break-away presentations by MM Instructors;

Becky Tenges on Critical Reasoning as it applies to determining primary issues in the horse,

Becky and Lise Lunde on our new Masterson Method Equine Specialist Training for EAAT,

Sandy Vreeberg and Lori Thompson on Business Building,

and our own Social Media, Marketing and Jim’s Exec Assistant, Kaitlin Uehling on optimizing the use of Facebook in your business.

We also had one more presenter on the final day who was in charge of updating Practitioners on the latest MM Techniques, making sure that all participants got what they came for, and fun. That would be me.
A short video from the first night at the conference (the meet and greet).

On Saturday night we were entertained around the ole’ campfire with music by Mark Rashid and his long-time musical partner Brad Fitch .

My head’s starting to reel again so I’m going to move on to South Africa. More on the Conference next month.
South Africa

I spent three weeks in January near Johannesburg in the company of our MM Instructors there, Rob and Chantal Holder. They’re very active equine therapists working with horses that compete in Eventing and Show Jumping World Cup Trials in South Africa (ZA). There is a long tradition of jumping and eventing in ZA, and the clients’ barns (or yards) that Rob and Chantal took us to were amazing as was the quality and care of the horses.

Over the three weeks we added 12 Weekend Seminar Students, 23 Advanced Students and 3 new Certified Practitioners to our rolls.
We also had the help of ZA Certified Practitioner, Rene Brinkman, and newly-minted MMCP's Alex Davies and Sara Boulle. Thanks!

We did a Friday evening bodywork presentation and Meet-and-Greet (and drink) along with an in-hand Lippizaner demonstration at the South African Lippizaners that attracted around 200 attendees. Proceeds from this, from Rob and Chantal’s Outreach program, and the Mike Dunne Foundation went to the ZA Lippizaners organization.
The trip to South Africa (my first) was another success in our book, thanks to the skills and passion that Rob and Chantal Holder have for horses that compete at the highest levels, and to the less fortunate equines that work in the more poverty-stricken areas of ZA. Thanks to Chantal and Rob, and to Mike Dunne in the US for founding an organization dedicated to uplifting horses and humans in this country, and now extending overseas.
Well, I wanted to leave you with a couple of video clips of the trip to S. Africa, and of course a couple of wildlife (no, not from the Conference) images. You can find tons more on the Jim Masterson Facebook page

Pictured below: Sullen group these South Africans.

We’ll hear more about Conference next month.

Until then, like me,

Enjoy your horses,

Question: What was the biggest “take away” for you from this conference?
Answer: Jim’s jokes are not as bad as some people think.
Mark Rashid’s work is very well aligned with MM and made for very good addition to the overall conference. Jerry Schmidt and Jochen Schleese were also very informative, gave us very useful information and techniques to add to the MM tool kit.
Best part of conference was to meet MMCP’s from all over the world, share knowledge and be together as a community. This is a healthy and vibrant group, meeting like this is so helpful because we all go back to our little islands and do our thing and sometimes it feels like we are on our own. This conference made it so we felt a part of the greater MM community.
Masterson Method Equine Specialist Program News
Let's help Jim achieve his mission that all horses receive the Bladder Meridian Technique!
There are seats open for the  Masterson Method Equine Specialist Training in Tucson, AZ April 7-8 ! If you're interested in partnering with an equine-assisted learning or therapy facility to bring the Bladder Meridian Technique to coaching or therapy programs and their horses (remember Jim's mission), consider our next 2-day training in Tucson! Then follow that up with fieldwork and the online exam to complete your MMES Certification! See more and register on the MMES website .
Here's what some participants had to say after doing the Bladder Meridian Technique on horses in a therapy setting:

“You reminded me to breathe, showed me how to ground myself, and be in the present, in the moment with the horse. I felt myself relax little by little each time the horse released her tension.”

“It was cool how subtle changes in me made great changes in the horse. How taking a deep breath and becoming aware of my breathing affected the horse.”

“[You] really helped me think about the horse and her tension. She showed me she had tension in the same places I have tension, in my neck. She was showing me who I am. I felt so relaxed.”

In the photo below: A woman in a support group learning and practicing the bladder meridian in January in Minnesota!
Thank you Lise Lunde and Becky Tenges for presenting on this new program at the Masterson Educational Conference. MMCPs, fieldwork students and even staff were excited to hear how this all developed and the framework behind it!

Business-Building Opportunities for MMCPs & Fans of the Method – Yup! We Got ‘Em!
Hearty greetings to all of you who heard Jim’s postscript at the Business-Building breakout session of the Educational Conference last weekend in Tucson!

For those of you who were not able to attend, Jim (along with Lori Thompson and Sandy Vreeburg) dispensed many tried-and-true nuggets to generate clients in your area - one of them being to spend as much time as possible at expos as a Masterson booth attendant.

  • As a booth attendant, you are able to network with potential clients in your area who are interested in the Masterson Method, or who (remarkably!) have never heard of the Masterson Method.
  • In the process, you are able to distribute your business cards, as well as encourage sales of Jim’s books/DVDs, which pique curiosity and create potential demos for you down the road.
  • There is also “hang-out” time with Jim – a chance to ask questions and pick his brain.

Right now Jim is on the schedule to demo at the Mane Event Scottsdale , coming up March 30 – April 1, and at the Midwest Horse Fair Madison, WI , April 20-22.
We would love to see you at these events!
Priority will be given to those who can commit to participating all 3 days, but don’t let that discourage you. There is room for all, so please indicate in an email to which day(s) you are available.
In light of that, and because immersion in this type of event is a great way to grow in your knowledge of the Masterson Method, we also wish to encourage those still not quite at the MMCP level to participate ! Simply include your experience level in your email as well. I.e., Fieldwork Block 1, 2,3, Advanced 5-Day Certificate, Weekend Seminar 2-Day Certificate.
We intend to create a fun and highly rewarding experience for all who attend!

Sara Boulle
West Rand, Johannesburg, South Africa
I was born into a very horsey family, so have been fortunate to be around these amazing creatures my whole life. After leaving school as soon as I could, I gained my BHSII and Side Saddle B Instructor exam then went on to run a yard with my mother backing and producing horses and teaching.  After meeting my now husband in 2000, I immigrated to South Africa in 2001 with a horse in tow.
I was first introduced to the Masterson Method by Richard Maxwell while having a lesson. I asked who could work on my horse as he was going back to the UK and he told me to do it myself!  So, after watching the DVD, I took the book into the stable and got going. The results were astonishing. I found myself thinking I would do a little bodywork before tacking up but then would get carried away and before I knew it a full session had been done and I had to turn the horse back out! This is when I made the decision to start the certification process. It has been an incredible journey and I loved every minute. As Jim says, Certification is only the beginning and now the learning starts!

Huge thanks to my mentor Vicky Devlin and Chantal and Rob Holder. I am so grateful to you all for your help and passing on your valuable knowledge.
