The Masterson Method ®
Monthly eNewsletter - October 2018
Hello All,

International News (Or, “It’s Thursday, this must be Paris.”)

Fall is our busy international season here at MM. Just finishing up two and a half weeks of courses here in the UK. Weather has been great! Really. The trees are turning fall colors (or colours), and our final day was only the second cold, wet day of the trip; so all is well here. Last week’s Advanced 5-Day Course was very international, with two students coming from Ireland (one of them a Norwegian), one from India (although she’s originally from Germany), one from France, Netherlands (originally German), a Japanese student from Singapore, and one Englishwoman. I’m becoming an expert in languages and can now speak English in almost any accent.

We spent time at some smaller, well-run racing and three-day eventing barns (yards in England), at Emily Baker’s Dovecote Stables in Churchill and at Ian Vandenberg’s Hartsop Farm.
This weekend we also graduated eight new Masterson Method Certified Practitioners. Three from Germany, one from Netherlands and four from the UK. Finished our final day celebrating with dinner at a cozy pub down the road, just as the weather started turning cold. You’ll be hearing about our new MMCPs as they tell us their stories on future newsletters. Stay tuned. Congratulations MMCPs!

I’ll be in Australia in three weeks, teaching courses and presenting at Equitana in Melbourne. We still have some spots left at our Advanced Course there, and at our Weekend Seminar at Steve Halfpenny’s
near Adelaide. These may fill up after Equitana, so if interested Act Now! (Well, you don’t have to act, just sign up if interested.)

Coming up, we’ll be teaching our first Advanced 5-Day Course in Germany in March. (That course is full, but thought I’d mention it as we’re talking international). Still, come see us at the Equitana Horse
Expo in Germany, if you happen to be passing through the neighborhood. If you ever have the chance to
travel to one of our courses in the UK or Europe, they ARE, educational and fun.

Speaking of educational and fun, last year we had a very successful Educational Conference for MMCPs in the U.S. in Tucson, Arizona. It looks like we will now have an Educational Conference in the UK for our
European and UK MMCPs in June 2019. Pencil in those dates! More next newsletter.

We’re ALWAYS looking for like-minded people to host Masterson Method Weekend Seminars here in the good ole’ US of A. Whether you have a place at home or know someone who has a facility that has horses and will accommodate some students, the benefits are many:

  • With a free spot as the host you will get “hands-on-hands” instruction from a (personally trained :) Masterson Method Instructor to really get the feel of the Beyond Horse Massage Techniques.
  • Take it from ole’ Cyclone here, your horses may get the benefit of release of some pretty deep tension.
  • It’s an opportunity to meet and make connections with like-minded people.
  • You get the support of our amazing Masterson Method team with promotion and guidance on how to put on the Seminar, and we handle the registrations.
  • I can guarantee you’ll be inspired by what your horse has to tell you, and by the gratitude the participants feel for having the opportunity to learn to do this with the horse.
  • It’s fun
  • And finally, you’ll be helping me reach my goal of having every horse on the planet experience, at least once, the Bladder Meridian technique. (My arms and feet are getting tired and I could use a little help on this one :).
Our classes in England and Europe often tend to be large
but don’t be intimidated by the images of large groups of participants intensely focused on learning from horses and having lots of fun. We also like to schedule smaller not as large groups of people interested in learning from horses and having lots of fun.
If you’d like to learn more about how to do this, contact Tamara in “the office” by email: or give her a call at 641-209-6468.

In the meantime check out more of what’s happening below, including a Course Calendar to tell you if there’s a course near you, stories on some of our new MMCPs , the latest news from our MMES program , our fall sale , and a check in from our Gunnison, CO Weekend Seminar host.

Next month you’ll be hearing from me from Down Under… no, not the table - down under the planet, in Australia. I’ll be sure to let you know what’s happening then.

Until then, like me,
Enjoy your horses.

Our Gunnison, Colorado Weekend Seminar Host Checking In
"We had a great weekend seminar and I feel things ran smoothly. Everyone was open and friendly and willing to share with each other. There was plenty of engagement with each other as well as questions and answers during Loni’s excellent demonstrations. . . .

The organization of the seminar was great. I had plenty of communication with the office and I never had to wait long for a response. The girls answered all my questions and forwarded the specific information on to the participants that I had sent them that pertained to our logistics. Super support staff!! . . .

I got more than what I expected out of the seminar. Not only did I further broaden and deepen my understanding of what Masterson Method is and how to properly perform the techniques, I made many new friends that I will have for a lifetime. . . ."
"I am honored to be a part of the Masterson community. And I want you to know what a truly a special treat it was to have Loni and Sandy stay with me at my home. Getting to know them in quiet times and experiencing their warmth and love was a wonderful and magical experience for me personally. They along with Carol Cunefare are gold star ambassadors for Jim’s methods. . . .

Thank you once again for the opportunity to be a host as well as a participant. I really felt I increased my knowledge and feel for the techniques even though I just attended Jim’s clinic. There is just so much material to take in, let alone master, haha, on the two days even with reading the book and watching the videos ahead of time. It was great for me to have this “follow-up” clinic to reinforce and clarify the positions and pressures I was using. I’d recommend it! I feel better prepared for my next step with the 5 Day in Texas in November. Can’t wait!!"
Most sincerely,
Carol Townsend

Masterson Method Equine Specialist
Program News
This program is all about giving back to horses while also providing a benefit to equine-assisted learning students and/or therapy clients. We teach equine-assisted learning and therapy professionals (therapists, coaches, instructors) how to practice the simplest light touch techniques on their horses, and then how to teach their students or clients how to help horses release tension. Participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills, and horses learn a new way of relating to people while releasing tension. It's a win/win!
If you’re a member of PATH Int’l, check your mailbox for the Strides Magazine Fall issue. Megan Dushin, MMES Coordinator, wrote a piece,  Listening Through Touch - The Masterson Method equine bodywork is a win-win for horses and humans . Kelly Jefferson, MMCP and MM Equine Specialist, taught several veterans and volunteers how to do the Bladder Meridian technique, and then together with Megan was awestruck with their amazing comments in the follow-up interviews. Here’s a favorite quote of ours:

It forced me to relax - because you have to breathe fully and completely (I tend to breathe shallowly). It forced me to be a bit more aware too. I had more oxygen in my system - I was focused and concentrating. I wasn’t having any panic attacks or any intrusive thoughts of bad memories. Everything was focused on my breathing which was focused on keeping the horse calm. It was very much like a working meditation.” - Rachel, military veteran
Note: If you've already attended the Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar , you have the option to skip Day 1 for a $200 discount.

Stories from the Field
Dawn Rick , demonstrated The Masterson Method at Inspiration Stables’ fundraising event in Epworth, Iowa this past week. Parents, donors, and those interested in therapeutic riding came out to be with the horses. Dawn Rick shared; “I was grateful to participate in a small way by presenting The Masterson Method Bladder Meridian to several people. Each person was able to experience releases and understood that they were giving a “Gift” to Max (the demo horse) by helping him release tension.” Inspiration Stables is hoping to include The Masterson Method in their program in the near future. We think they ought to!!
Releasing Tension in Your Horse's Poll
Learn an easy-to-use technique that can make a difference in your horse’s poll.

The Masterson Method® is an innovative form of equine massage that allows the horse to release deep, accumulated pain and tension in muscles and connective tissue. Through the use of light touch and gentle movement in a relaxed state, and observation of a range of the horse's responses (these visual and palpable responses tell you what the horse's body is feeling), you'll open doors to improved health and performance while enhancing communication with your horse.

Learn more techniques in the Beyond Horse Massage Book and DVD.
New Certified Practitioners
Jennifer Verre
Plymouth, Mass achusetts

Jennifer loves owning and showing American Saddlebreds in the discipline of Saddle seat. However, as repetitive issues came up about her horse’s wellbeing, she began researching a better way to find the true cause rather than continue to simply treat the symptoms.

As a runner she is intimately aware of the importance of a "body in motion." Recognizing that regular bodywork helps keep her on pace, she has married her athletic experience & knowledge into her passion for horses and has opened a door to something new that she truly loves.

She is certified in Equine Massage Therapy from the Bancroft School of Massage in Worcester and is thrilled to add The Masterson Method ® interactive bodywork approach to her toolbox. As an MMCP she is able work “with” your horse and offer feedback of reaction points and restriction patterns, all while releasing tension and helping your horse work towards their best body in motion.

Malia Aldrich
Carmel Valley, California

The spark that horses ignited in Malia began in her childhood while racing wild ponies along reed filled canals with her cousin in Sonoma County. That spark grew in 2000 and further ignited Malia's soul upon meeting that special horse who taught her about being a good leader, listener and what real commitment was as young adult. This fire opened the door for Malia and she became a fixture at the barn which naturally evolved into a small local training business in Carmel Valley. Malia has a natural ability of softness and feel which spoke well to the youngsters and she enjoyed starting young colts and fillies under saddle as well as teaching novice riders to learn that same feel with their own horses. There was a moment in her life where that spark was dampened by the loss of her sweet gelding to a catastrophic injury just 10 days before the birth of her first daughter that she decided to take a step back from horses to only focus on her a family and heal her heart from the loss of Dugan. Horses were always in her heart and were just sitting on the back burner waiting ever so patiently for her spark to reignite. The Masterson Method did that for Malia, reigniting that deep connection for horses. With her love and natural ability for horses the path became ever more clear that it was her duty and desire to heal and help all equine. With hard work, dedication, and exemplary coaches, mentors and family support Malia proudly became a certified practitioner in August of 2018. Her business Malia Rose Aldrich Equine Performance Bodywork is dedicated to all horses, big and small, of all disciplines from trail ridden backyard loves to grand prix level divas, serving all equine and their riders within central coast of California and beyond. Malia resides in remote east Carmel Valley with her husband Forest, 2 horse crazy daughters (ages 4 & 6) , 4 outdoor country kitties, 2 dusty ranch pups, 1 performance horse “Sonny” and 1 one of a kind amazing kids horse “La Jolla.”
