Hello All,
Northern California
My
only
trip in the month of August was to beautiful Larkin Valley near Watsonville near Santa Cruz near San Francisco in California. Nice, cool trip. We did two back-to-back
Final Certification Courses
there, producing eleven new MMCPs. We used a new two-day certification format with smaller class sizes, replacing the old, three-day format with larger class sizes and it went very well.
On top of that, it’s nice there in Larkin Valley, with nice barns in the redwoods, nice horses in them, and a nice brew-pub at the end of the valley. All in all; a week well-spent. Thanks Sandy, for the organization and the help!

Home again now. The weather’s cooled off, almost as if Fall’s coming. Have been spending a lot of time in The Office, doing Office Work, but have also taken advantage of the cooler weather to get outside and do a little driving,
a little flying:
|
|
and a little sitting on the back porch and watching the sun go down.
|
|
Now let’s get down to the serious stuff:
|
|
Education
Don’t let the title fool you, this is a fun article. Megan has taken a dry, academic, scientific subject and turned it into a fun, interesting investigation written from a horse-person’s perspective.
|
|
Our roving international MM Instructor Diane Howard has informed us that she has been accepted to study for an MSc in Equine Science given by the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Edinburgh.
The University of Edinburgh is currently ranked as 18th in the world and the Equine Science program is the only such degree (MSc) given by an international veterinary center. Diane is an incurable learner as well as a teacher, and will be adding this education to a long list of other blocks of knowledge. Go Diane!

More Interesting Stuff
I had a couple of on-line conversations during the month with some very interesting people.
One was a nice long chat with Dressage and Horsemanship Trainer Patrick King on his audio broadcast, “Talking About Horses Live”. Patrick is an interesting fellow who combines real horsemanship with classical dressage. I found that not only do we share similar philosophies on horses and horsemanship, but it turns out we also have similar senses of humor. Apologizing in advance for the jokes; if you’re feeling brave you can listen in on Patrick and me having fun with a wide range of horse-related topics at
pkhorsemanship.com/news-updates.
|
|
I also had a nice conversation with Glenys Cox at
HorseChats.com
in Australia. Glenys’s mission is
“to improve the lives of horses around the world, through the education of their owners, riders and handlers.” This was a good conversation; very in-depth and a little more serious, and Glenys did a good job of keeping me on track.
Patrick and Glenys have both taken on the goal of educating, improving and enriching the lives of horse-people (and horses) around the world. They both have impressive lists of interviews on their websites (I hope I’m not breaking the trend) and I look forward to being able to chat with both of them again. Go to these sites to get educated, entertained and enriched by like-minded people.

Report on our Labor Day Therapy Horse Challenge
The idea for this Challenge came about after a talk I had with one of our MMCPs, Arron Haggart. Arron is an experienced horseman who has a lot of time in managing horses (and people) at equine assisted therapy facilities. He’s responsible for some of the impetus behind our MMES Program. We were talking about horses who run the risk of “shutting down” when their mental or emotional well-being falls to the bottom of the list. He said with simple, regular use of the Bladder Meridian treatment he has turned around horses that consistently stand in the corner with their ears pinned or spin away when you enter the stall, into horses that are engaged and stand relaxed with their heads out, attentive to things going on outside of their stalls. These horses absorb a lot of mental and emotional as well as physical stress in their jobs, and this often goes unnoticed, especially in busy or under-funded programs. Often we don’t realize what a protective barrier or “shell” they’ve put up until we get underneath their survival, bracing response. The
Bladder Meridian Technique
is such an easy and simple way to do that.
|
|
Anyways, long story a little less long; the goal of the Therapy Horse Challenge is to get attention to therapy horses through volunteer Bladder Meridian time. A report on this below; although it doesn’t have to stop there. I hope to be able to report on more of this in the next newsletter.
This Fall
Check out our Calendar below for Weekend Seminars and Courses in, well… everywhere, this fall. I’ll be in
England
starting September 27th, and
Australia
in November for Equitana, and to do Weekends and Advanced Courses in Victoria and South Australia.
Check out more stuff below, and I’ll talk to you next month.
Until then, like me,
Enjoy your horses.

"The opportunity to get really
personalized, individual coaching
on the techniques is unlike any course I’ve had. The course offers a really appropriate balance of
lecture and practical application
. Jim and his team have a wonderfully encouraging coaching approach that facilitates learning, confidence and skill.
Throughout the 5-Day each one of us had the experience of getting the “feel” of what certain techniques are designed to release.

Masterson Method Equine Specialist
Program News
|
|
This program is all about giving back to horses while also providing a benefit to equine-assisted learning students and/or therapy clients. We teach equine-assisted learning and therapy professionals (therapists, coaches, instructors) how to practice the simplest light touch techniques on their horses, and then how to teach their students or clients how to help horses release tension. Participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills, and horses learn a new way of relating to people while releasing tension. It's a win/win!

"...In 2014 I found my tribe at
Solace Equine Center
where we partner with addiction centers to work with adults in rehab and share that magic with them during their healing process. No two sessions are the same, and the horses somehow know to bring the perfect lesson to each person. I have always been drawn to giving back the gift of healing to our horses and found The Masterson Method to be the perfect tool...."

Stories from the Field
Dawn Rick
, Masterson Method Certified Equine Specialist, offered showed U.S. veterans at
BraveHearts Therapeutic Riding & Educational Center
how to do the Bladder Meridian Technique. BraveHearts is the largest equine-based program in the US serving military veterans, and is home to
Hank
, PATH Int'l's 2017 Therapeutic Horse of the Year. The veterans who participated were really excited to be helping horses (including Hank), and to see the visible results of their work. They teamed up to help several horses work through tension, and were reluctant to end when the session was over! Dawn did a full session on one of their horses afterwards, and has been invited to return to BraveHearts to help more horses and veterans.

Take the leap at an Advanced 5-Day Course
|
"I just spent the last week taking the Advanced 5-Day Course. The experience was unique because it was so totally experiential. I learned so much in such a short period of time. It was so gratifying to achieve quick results using the Masterson Method. My classmates were all professional equine bodyworkers which made quite a useful networking experience as well. Jim’s method will take your current knowledge base and take it up another level whether you’re already an equine bodyworker, or an equine bodywork class addict like I am. The class gave me confidence in taking the next step in making equine bodywork my career." ~Kathy Mayeda
"After the two day seminar you have an idea how to improve the condition, problems, or tension in the horse – it’s really helpful! The five day seminar goes deeper and you get a lot of information about how you are able to find the problem areas of the horse. You get lots of experience to work with several horses during the five day." ~Margit Duelger

Malu Berserik
Kudelstaart, The Netherlands
Malu found her love for horses when she was just 6 years old. At 8 years old she started to ride at the local riding school. Although her parents were not horse people, she has been dreaming to have her own horse during her whole childhood. At 19 years of age she bought her first mare and since then she always had horses.
In 2009 and 2010 she bought two foals. Because she wanted to raise them so that they would become balanced horses, she got into natural horsemanship. The harmony between human and horse became one of her passions. The principals of straightness training and the positive influence of natural horsemanship coaches, taught her the right balance between a balanced body and a balanced mind.
Because her youngest foal, Bob, got injured during birth she knew he would always have physical challenges. Malu looked for a way to treat him herself so that she could keep him in the best condition as he could be. During a holiday she was introduced to the Masterson Method and she immediately was hooked. She started her journey to become a Masterson Method Certified Practitioner.
The gratefulness and deep connection that is present with all the horses that she helps, keeps on fascinating her. She specializes in bodywork for horses with behavioral problems (cribbing, headshaking, spooking, aggression, anxiety etc). She is also a registered equine cranial sacral therapist and currently studying to become an equine osteopath. Malu hopes that many horse owners in The Netherlands will experience the beneficial effects of the Masterson Method with their horses and start to learn it for themselves. She is based in the west of the Netherlands and is happy to travel to any location in the Netherlands.
