Commodore's Corner:

Winter is just around the corner, and I can see that the boats are reluctantly being set to sleep on the hard. It was another good summer at the club. We still have the clubhouse open and many activities being held so I encourage everyone to visit the club, meet old friends, make new ones, and check on the boats.

This Sunday, November 6th, we will have the Going Out of Commission ceremony, and I invite everyone to attend. The following Saturday, November 12th, we’ll have the annual work party to put the marina, pool, and grounds to bed. We could use as many people as possible to help to make this job go quickly.

November is also budget month and the board and department heads have worked hard to make the 2023 budget a realistic and complete one. I thank all who have worked on this task. The new budget will be presented to the membership at the annual meeting on December 9th; please try to make it so you can keep informed on how your hard-working dollars are being spent.

Lastly, I would like to remind all Junior members that your membership will lapse at the end of the year unless you request to continue on as a member. Keep on the lookout for an email blast that will have a form you can complete to make your intentions known to the board.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this Sunday!

-Andy

We have come to the end of another great season of boating at Shattemuc. It went by so quickly and now the focus turns to preparing our boats and the marina for winter. De and Bruno have already started hauling member boats and preparing the yard for winter storage. Please be sure to touch base with De to set up a time to haul and set your boat on the hard. Please remember to properly chain your stands to protect against movement during the winter. Also, a reminder to properly dispose of any hazardous fluids (oil, grease, antifreeze, etc.,) generated by servicing engine, transmission, drives, etc. Please do not leave your boat ‘plugged in’ while unattended during the out of water storage period.

This fall, our work party will be held on Sat the 12th. Please come on down and help us put the marina to bed for the winter. A notice will be sent out soon reminding all of the date and time. As in winters past, we will be putting together smaller work groups at various times to repair or replace docks and fingers. This winter we will be concentrating on the east dock and parts of the old gas dock area. More information on this work to come later.

Our ‘Out of Commission’ ceremony is set for Sunday 11/6. Come on down to officially close the 2022 season. A notice will also be sent out shortly with the details for this event.

Hope to see you around the club.

-Pete

On October 23rd, Shattemuc hosted its first “Hospitalized Veteran’s Sailing Event”. Nine

Special thanks go to the boat owners who participated: Bill and Amy Goldsmith with crew member Rudy Bergstrom; Dave and Tracy Longo with crew Joe Longo; and Bob Millstein with crew Bob Bergstrom.

First... Fall Clean Up Is Saturday, Nov. 12th!

Please come down and help us get the clubhouse and the grounds ready for the winter. Many people helped last year and I can't thank them enough! We'd like to see some new people this time; it's a great way to meet other members and make new friends. As a volunteer club, we all get to help clean "Our House" and put the marina to bed for the cold months.

Remember that the clubhouse is open all year 'round, and the Friday happy hour is always a great way to end the work week.

Please be aware that occasionally there are private events at the club from Labor Day through Memorial Day. These are members or their friends who have a special day that they reserve through the club. Please be respectful and observe the signs for the spaces that are available for members to use; these are always open to club members, even during a rental. The specific information is also always available on the "member only" website under the heading of forms.

Please come visit the club throughout the winter and look out for the wonderful events that Benny coordinates for us all. I look forward to seeing everyone at "Our House" during the winter until we're back in the water!

Montauk Daisy (Nippon Daisy)
In the West and South gardens, October
'Nippon' is generally used to name plants that originated in Japan. Montauk daisies, also known as Nippon daisies, are native to China and Japan. However, they were given their common name 'Montauk daisies' because they have naturalized on Long Island, all around the town of Montauk.

Racing & Regatta
Alas, the sailboat racing season is over on the Hudson River. However, reviews of this year's activities and plans for next year are already being developed. The fall meeting of the Hudson River Yacht Racing Association will take place at Minisceongo Yacht Club on November 2. If you have any comments, criticisms, ideas, or would like to become more involved next year, please let Shattemuc's representatives know: Vicky Arbitrio and Peter Oden.

October 2012 - Hurricane Sandy

Ten years ago in October the river rose four feet above usual and sent many boats floating from their dry dock.

No one was there to see it because it happened over night. In the morning we saw the damage.

Hudson River Almanac October/22

Highlight of the Week

10/3 – Croton Point, HRM 35: In a midday low tide, we set our 30-foot seine in the little cove we call Mother’s Lap preparing for Coman Hills Elementary students from Armonk. Despite a raw and windy day, they were excited. The students quickly found two “sheds,” moulted blue crab exoskeletons on the beach, as well as the leftovers of an “eagle meal,” a partially-eaten Atlantic menhaden.

9/17 – Hook Mountain, HRM 31: We counted 900 south-migrating raptors at the Hook Mountain Hawkwatch today; broad-winged hawk was high count with 495. Non-raptor migrants included
2 ruby-throated hummingbirds, 27 monarch butterflies, and one spotted lanternfly headed the other way.
- Tim Brew, Dominic Barber, Trudy Battaly and Drew Panko

9/24 – Hook Mountain, HRM 31: We counted 301 south-migrating raptors today at the Hook Mountain Hawkwatch; broad-winged hawk was high count with 163. Non-raptor migrants included 12 monarch butterflies.

Craft Beer at Shattemuc Continues!
by Peter Horree

If there are any issues with draft beer at Shattemuc, please do not hesitate to text or call me.

Pete Horree – (914) 703-8554

New Craft Beer & Spirits distributor

For the past several years I have been developing a very successful craft beer program for SYC. This involved my ordering kegs from a retailer in Brewster, NY, picking up the kegs, bringing them to Shattemuc, then returning the empties back to the retailer. This has become a burden and with today’s gas prices, expensive for me. We are excited to announce that we have opened an account with a craft beer & spirit distributor out of New Paltz, NY. They will deliver to us once a week, bring the kegs inside, and pick up the empties. This will save me a lot of time, money, and work. They carry most of our favorites and have very competitive prices. I will still be hands on with selection and ordering as well as maintaining the draft beer equipment. Look for upcoming new craft beer cans, new canned cocktails, as well as some craft spirits, & non-alcohol craft beers in the future.

Our current selections are…

Fiddlehead Brewing Co. Shelburne, VT – Fiddlehead IPA “Fiddlehead IPA is a hazy, well-balanced American IPA with mellow bitterness and a dry, refreshing finish..”

Peekskill Brewery Peekskill, NY – Skills Pils “Classic American Lager, crisp and refreshing.”

Coming on Tap Next…

Bronx Brewery, Bronx, NY – “World Gone Hazy” IPA

Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, Framingham, MA – “Post Shift” Pilsner

New Canned Beers Available Now - Sloop Brewing - Super Soft IPA & Juice Bomb IPA, Von Trapp Brewing Golden Helles Lager.

New Canned Cocktail - Maine Craft Distilling “Maine Mule Sparkling Cocktail”

New Cider – Downeast Cider “Original Blend”

New Non-Alcoholic Beer – Athletic Brewing “Upside Dawn”
