Dear friend of the parks,

We are so excited!

And we hope you are too—so much that you will make a special gift today to leverage a $50,000 matching grant challenge opportunity to help us help parks!

Donate Today!

We imagine that most of us are out trying to enjoy our summer—and we hope that means spending a lot of time in Chicago’s parks and lakefront! Except for when our public green spaces are gated off for private events, that’s one of the easiest and safest things to do as we all continue to readjust to “normal” life at our own pace after the height of COVID-19.

And we know that lots of friends of the parks are as dedicated as ever—if not more—to ensuring our public park spaces as key elements of healthy neighborhoods and a healthy Chicago.

We saw renewed energy at this year’s Earth Day. Plus, we are seeing an uptick in Park Advisory Council (PAC) activity in general. In fact, just steps away from the unauthorized construction at the museum in Humboldt Park that is generating so much controversy—and community mobilization—the suspended PAC is re-activating tonight. So you know where we’ll be!

Meanwhile, we are busy keeping a close eye on the new mayoral administration to see how investments in park amenities, acreage, and programming will fare. And we are trying to get a meeting with Mayor Johnson to seek his intervention in the environmental injustices inherent in the on-going dumping of dredge at the Confined Disposal Facility on Chicago’s lakefront adjacent to Calumet Park.

So as we recognize our 48th anniversary as an organization this month, we continue in this watchdog role, with NASCAR in Grant Park and so many mega-festivals also at the forefront.

All this while continuing to assess and innovate as we figure out what parks, PACs, and other park partners need from us post-pandemic to collectively protect, preserve, and promote our beloved parks!

Amidst all of this, we are seeing philanthropic grant patterns revert to more “normal” timelines. So we are back to our reality in which summer giving in slower. And we are reading reports that individual giving was way down across the nation last year—much like what we experienced in 2022.

That said, we are super thankful for some new and increased multi-year foundation grants last year that affirmed the importance of our work and are really helping to tide us over. And we know that there are a lot of you that remain deeply committed to our parks, despite what have been uncertain economic times.

So we are thrilled to invite you to respond to Susan Schwarz who has again taken up her “normal” role of encouraging special gifts from you, particularly over the summer! Honoring the legacy of her late husband, former board chair Charles Schwarz, who loved investing in Chicago’s parks through time, talent, and treasure, Summer 2023 gifts will be matched up to $50,000! Susan is excited to inspire and mobilize lots of friends of the parks to join in to ensure we are on strong footing as we march toward our 50th anniversary a couple of years from now!

Will you make a special gift today?

As always, we are so grateful for your partnership. We cannot do this without you.

In solidarity,

Juanita Irizarry

Executive Director
