Math Networks

K-5 Math Network

K-5 Math Network participants wrapped up their semester-long study of the research of Margaret S. Smith and Mary Kay Stein in their book 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions. Educators summarized the 5 Practices framework, examined common challenges in the implementation of the framework and explored potential remedies for those challenges, and utilized a lesson planning template to plan a 5 Practices math lesson to implement with their students.

6-12 Math Network

The 6-12 Math Network reconvened on December 9th. We used balloons to learn about collecting and plotting data to determine the relationship and its parameters. The day was focused on the Ratio and Proportional Reasoning domain as teachers investigated supporting standards prior to and within each grade level to determine prior knowledge students need for the standard at their grade level to create a reasoning routine to start lessons. Teachers further analyzed the standards by aligning an engaging task to the standard and adapting instruction to fully meet the standard and proficiency level. Please join us next time on Thursday, Feb. 13th, 2025, for our deep dive into the Equations, Expressions and Inequalities domain: Registration and Details
