Matthew L. Nobriga

Receives Brown-Nichols Science Award


Matthew (Matt) L. Nobriga is being honored by his peers as the recipient of the 2024 Brown-Nichols Science Award. An assistant field supervisor with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Matt is a recognized expert on aquatic ecology and fish biology in California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta with extensive peer-reviewed publications and reports on native fishes, including the life histories of Delta and Longfin Smelt. In Matt’s nearly 30-year career in state and federal service, he has directly applied his scientific knowledge to address high-priority management and policy questions. He also mentored other agency staff toward contributing to significant published literature and producing highly relevant science-based models to support management decision-making.

About the Brown-Nichols Science Award



Established in 2008, the Brown-Nichols Science Award honors Dr. Randall Brown and Dr. Frederic Nichols's significant contributions to science through research, communication with managers and policymakers, and championing good science in the San Francisco Estuary and watershed. Together, they laid the foundation for the first Bay-Delta Science Conference.
