Maximizing 1850 and Later US Census Records
We are excited to bring back this class on using US census records. It's self-paced--no set time or "group meetings."

Virtually every US genealogist uses census records, but not everyone is aware of how those records can be maximized for what they do contain.

There are limitations to these records, but there are advantages to them as well. If you've wondered if you are getting the most out of US census records, this class is for you.

Content:

This set of three lectures looks at US census records from 1850 through 1940. Topics discussed will include:
  • enumerator instructions and how information "got in the census"
  • organization of original records
  • working with family structure in 1850-1870 records
  • correlating a family's census records over time
  • evaluating accuracy of census records
  • determining other records suggested by a family's enumerations
  • crafting census citations

We will not discuss online census search techniques or database query techniques. Our approach is laid-back, down-to-earth, and informal while providing accurate information and analysis.

Lectures:
  • three lectures as a separate media file--no streaming!
  • presentations are for personal use only but can be viewed more than once
  • handout included

Presenter:

Michael John Neill has thirty years of research experience and has used census records extensively in his own personal research. He has lead research trips to the Family History Library in Salt Lake and lectured nationally on a variety of genealogical topics.

Registration:
  • registration is affordable--$35 total--includes all three sessions and handouts
  • Watch your email for a response with download information that will come within 24 hours if you register during the week. Email mjnrootdig@gmail.com if you do not receive your download links.

Low-cost, informal, educational...
and fun!
