A Letter to My Mom
With a Diabetes Perspective

Family support is especially key to the health of children and teens living with diabetes.  Moms and dads, you make a difference!  Mother's Day is the perfect time to share this letter from one of our respected clinical volunteers.  We hope you enjoy.

Contributed by Kelly Alladina, RN, BSN, CDE - an individual with type 1 diabetes turned diabetes educator at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Kelly is giving back to the type 1 community and working alongside the endocrinologist who diagnosed her nearly twenty years ago.

Dear Mommy,
I'm a grown-up now.  I know I'm still your baby but I promise you I'm 28 years old and I'm a big girl now.  I even have my own baby.  Hard to believe, right?

We don't always talk about our feelings but I want you to know that I think you raised me and Ryan perfectly.  Every day wasn't perfect, but our lives would not be the same had you not been there for us as you were.  In the end everything is perfect.

We have never really talked about how you felt when I was diagnosed with diabetes.
I was always ok with it.  Yes, it stinks to have diabetes.  But to me, it's just a part of my life.  Being a diabetes educator now, though, I see what you had to go through...

Cycling for Kudzu at Spin for Kids!

Please join Camp Kudzu's team at Spin for Kids!  This year marks our 5th year at this event.  Registration is open now!  Spin for Kids is a fundraiser that makes our diabetes camps possible for dozens of kids at Camp Twin Lakes.

Spin for Kids is October 15, at Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, GA.  The routes include beautiful country-side and quaint towns like Rutledge and Madison.  And they're relatively flat!  You can choose what distance suits you, from 5 miles to a century ride.  The day is full of celebration, good food, and treats for riders.

Thank you, Eloise Lamons, for chairing this event, and thank you, Nikki Penda, for co-chairing!  We have another leader in the wings - and they all will cheer you on and assist you in your training and fund-raising efforts!

Medical Corner: Transition to Summer from School with Diabetes

It's hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close and summer fun is just around the corner! If I close my eyes I can smell the charcoal warming up the grill and feel my toes in the cool water. Long days at the pool, hiking the local trails, tubing down the river, and more await! These are the things that make summertime so memorable for children. Before all the fun-in-the-sun activities get underway, there are a few things to keep in mind for families of children with type 1 diabetes.

The transition from a structured school routine to a more flexible summer schedule can cause a fluctuation in blood sugar patterns. An increase in physical activities, a change in meal patterns, and even travel can account for ups and downs. Excitement about an outing to the zoo or nervousness about summer camp, playing in the heat, and even skimping on sleep can all influence blood sugars. However, with a little planning you can take control of your child's blood sugar and avoid that A1C from creeping up over the summer months...
