READING MENTORING PROGRAM NEWS

What a wonderful way to end the school year! Students and Reading Mentors celebrated with treats and book giveaways at 17 of our partner schools. Our hearts are full!
Another wonderful way to end the school year? In our annual teacher / administrator survey, 100 percent of respondents indicated that Lead to Read KC Reading Mentors positively influence students' attitudes about reading, with 82 percent indicating they "strongly agree" with that statement!

Were you a Reading Mentor this year? Many thanks for supporting our students and teaching partners!

You can complete our annual Reading Mentor survey in less than five minutes. By sharing your feedback, you’re helping to improve our program and make Lead to Read KC the easiest, most meaningful volunteer experience in Kansas City.
Please join us this fall! And, spread the word about how to become a Reading Mentor to your friends and colleagues!

Students need support now more than ever, so more schools are requesting our programming. If more Reading Mentors sign up, more children can receive one-to-one reading and mentoring support. Kansas City children need all hands on deck to recover from an unprecedented learning disruption. You can help!
Children's mental health suffered during the pandemic. Lead to Read KC is providing support. Check out KC Studio Magazine for a wonderful article on Lead to Read KC's author partnership program.

The school visits our author partners make as part of this program plant the seed to encourage children to use books and reading to self-educate, problem solve and discover.

Many thanks to KC Studio for spreading the word about this important program — and to our author partners for all they do to support our students!
And, please watch for Lead to Read KC in the news on KMBC and KCWE on Thursday, June 9. Lead to Read KC will be featured as a Community Days partner. Thank you, KMBC and KCWE!

Please share this newsletter to help spread the word! Kansas City children need our support now more than ever.

Lead to Read KC celebrates the power of stories and the importance of commemorating our past. We are pleased to welcome local legend Mr. Alvin Brooks for a special Juneteenth read-aloud at 1 p.m. Watch our social media in advance of the event for more details!
Check out our recent blog post to read about how Reading Mentor Mike McGuire volunteers in our in-person AND digital programs — on the same day.

Mike says this about the importance of reading, “My background is in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration, so I love math. So although both reading and math are important — and they are close to being equally important — I’d have to say that I think reading is the most important. If you can’t read, you can’t learn math. In fact, if you can’t read, you can’t learn much of anything else.
