It was an unsuspecting spring Saturday morning in April.... A beautiful day on the campus of Iowa State University, bright with excitement for the long anticipated VEISHEA celebration and fresh with colorful floats, displays of interesting information and stands serving delicious foods. There was one group in attendance that stood out to me; a 4-H Club from Muscatine County named the Wapsie Legends.

4-H Camp Clean-Up Day a Success
4-H Campers and members joined 4-H collegiate members, club leaders, volunteers and Iowa State University faculty and extension staff at the Iowa 4-H Center on April 27 for the Spring Clean-Up Day. Thank you to all of the 60 hard workers who participated!
Participants enjoyed a continental breakfast before heading to do 15 different handy work projects throughout the camp. Some of these projects included painting boat racks, creating registration numbers on canoes, sprucing up hiking trails and fire rings, and general clean up in the cabins.  "I try to place volunteering for 4-H high on my priority list because of the benefits to the youth is everlasting," said Ashley Kinkade, a Collegiate 4-H member. "I was able to give back and make the camp a positive experience for all who attend, plus it was fun to get my hands dirty with 4-H members, staff and even with the Senior Vice President and Provost of Iowa State Jon Wickert!"
Camper scholarships traditionally offered by the Iowa 4-H Foundation to only state-level camps are being extended to all camps held at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer! The application deadline has been extended to accommodate additional applicants.
Additional information regarding the Iowa 4-H Foundation and the Iowa 4-H Center's relationship can be found on a FAQ page of the Iowa 4-H Foundation's website.
4-H Foundation Welcomes New Intern
Collins_Carter3 The Iowa 4-H Foundation welcomes Carter Collins as the new Marketing and Special Events Intern. Collins is a junior at Iowa State University studying both journalism and mass communications and political science. He's hometown is Hampton, Iowa, which is located in Franklin County.

Collins was a member of the Reeve Hampton Hustlers 4-H Club where he participated in a wide range of projects during his eight years in 4-H. Some of his favorite 4-H memories include becoming the Grand Champion in two different divisions at the dog show with his Shih Tzu named Max, his Food and Nutrition projects being selected four times for the Iowa State Fair and his numerous working exhibits with his best friend since kindergarten. His favorite 4-H memory is going to Chicago with 4-H'ers in neighboring counties.

He said the number one thing he enjoyed about being in 4-H were the people. "Due to my extensive involvement in 4-H, I had the opportunity to meet so many accepting, unique, and enthusiastic young people, extension staff and adult 4-H volunteers who understood my love and passion for making the best better," he said. "There really isn't anything else like 4-H."

Throughout the summer Collins will be providing support for the 2013 Scholarship Recognition Program, coordinating the auctions for the foundation's golf tournaments and organizing the Iowa 4-H Foundation's presence at the Iowa State Fair. He can be contacted at (515) 294-1607 or by email at
