Happy Spring! The April Blizzards did indeed bring May flowers which now adorn the inn both inside and out. Our gardens are abloom with cheerful bright colors. Michael and Blaine continue to amaze us with their talent. Michael found a fallen log in the woods with a big woodpecker hole and turned it into the gorgeous floral display (photo to the right) in our rear entry. We maintain a completely organic garden and are herbicide and pesticide free. Along with all of the beautifully placed plants and flowers, we embrace the often maligned dandelion as it is among the few early sources of nectar for our very important pollinating friend, the bee.
honeybee Being outdoors is much more pleasant now, and it's amusing to see one person in a sleeveless shirt and then another in a winter coat as we all adjust to the warmer temperatures.  There are great spring shopping deals around Freeport, but there are other fun things to do as the days grow longer and you venture just a short distance from town.

Spring and baby animals go together. Just a short drive from the Inn and adjacent to Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, you will find the 600 acre waterfront Wolfe's Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, a leading organic demonstration farm and educational resource center with the mission of transforming our relationship with farming and food for a healthier planet. There are gardens, hiking trails and animals galore! On our Mother's Day visit, we found young cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and the sounds of many baby birds nested in the rafters of the barn. A flock of laying hens and their mobile coop was in the closest pasture, and we learned that on average each lays one egg every 20 hours. A calendar of events included goat hiking. Yes ... goat hiking! We wanted to go, but the popular event was already full by the time we arrived at the farm.

We drove past the chickens and cow pasture to Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping. A stop in the camp store yielded some interesting treasures - and ice cream sandwiches. Here we learned that in addition to traditional camp sites, they have three cabins for rent. On our hunt for the cabins, we wove around the tree- lined dirt road past camp sites which varied in size and view, some pastoral, some coastal. We soon found the cabins; all three overlooking the sparkling waters of Casco Bay and shaded by towering pines, but our first choice was Point Senior with its expansive view and cook-out area overlooking the water. A set of wooden stairs leads down the water's edge, and we were delighted to discover that the campground rents kayaks.  We immediately planned a girlfriend's kayaking and cook-out getaway for this fall.
The view from Point Senior cabin at Wolfe's Neck Farm. Can you smell the salt air?
You never know what you'll find as you travel the back roads of Maine. We stumbled upon the charming Wealden Farm Stand surrounded by plants and with dried tobacco leaves hanging from the ceiling of the open air building. Maine grown tobacco was a new one on me. The owner is hoping to start making cigars at some point. Outside were six packs of flower and vegetable seedlings and gallon pots of perennials. Inside we found fresh produce and other foods, including local honey, baked goods, soup, frozen organic meats and an amazing wine selection.

While I'm not much of a shopper, my friend Valerie, visiting from Pennsylvania, convinced me to give it a go and see how Freeport shopping is done. It's a short and pleasant walk from the inn to the many stores lining Main Street and its offshoots. After a stop for lipstick for my mom, we reached Freeport Village Station across from LL Bean and discovered that now through June 21, 2018, if you spend $100 or more on any day at any of the stores or restaurants in Freeport Village Station, you get two free tickets to see a movie at Nordica Theater (Monday - Thursday only). You must purchase the tickets on the same day as the date on your receipts, but the tickets are valid through mid-August. When you're ready to take in a flick, check out the Freeport Maine Coupon Page available at the front desk for a deal on popcorn.  What's a movie without popcorn?
Valerie was an excellent mentor and recommended a strategic approach to our shopping, attempting to make our purchases so we carried them the shortest amount of time before returning to the inn. But if you plan a big haul, there' s free parking at LL Bean, Freeport Village Station, and numerous spots on the streets around town.
I've shopped 'til I'm ready to drop.
Shopping's fun, which must be why our Serious Shopper Package is our hottest seller, but it can also be a lot of work. After an hour I was exhausted and hungry.  Parcels in hand, we were ready to return to the inn and the Broad Arrow Tavern for lunch where our new spring menu was just released. While many favorites remain,

look for some fresh new items. A gentleman at the bar was eating the baked haddock, and I asked if he was enjoying it. He said yes, and verified that when he told me he had it the night before too! A celebration was in progress for a wonderful family who visits us yearly, complete with ballons and a cake made by our talented bakers. Let us know in advance if you'll be celebrating a special occasion and would like to order a sweet treat to crown the event.  Happy Birthday, Doreen!

Our long-time employee, Celeste, recently had her own special occasion  to celebrate when Governor and Mrs. Lepage dined with us in the Broad
Celeste with Gov. and Mrs. Lepage
Arrow Tavern. She was SO excited to meet the Pine Tree State's first couple...which brings us to this month's TRIVIA QUESTION:
What daring aerial adventure did Mrs. Lepage undertake in order to support our military veterans?
