In April we shared our first 40 for 40 video, an introduction with CEO Joon Bang. Sothy's story, seen in the video above, was the catalyst for the 40 for 40 Campaign. We met Sothy during a listening session where he shared his experience with the Killing Fields in Cambodia and his experience with fatherhood and the struggles to support the needs of his family. His story, along with others we are highlighting through the year, is really important for NAPCA because they shed light not only on the needs of our senior population but on their strength, resiliency, and continued need for support and hope. The Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center (GBCGAC) has been a NAPCA SCSEP partner for more than twenty years, serving seniors in the greater Boston area with culturally relevant programs, access to employment, and other tools for independence and healthy lives. President and CEO Joon Bang attended their annual Mother's Day celebration featuring dancing, celebration, and a meal with GBCGAC's NAPCA SCSEP participants. NAPCA Joins Coalition to Strengthen Bone Health NAPCA has joined with twelve other leading agencies on aging, healthcare, and women's issues to help spotlight and reduce common and costly bone fractures in aging adults. Half of all women and over twenty percent of all men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis, despite this condition often being untreated and undiagnosed. NAPCA Spotlight

As we see the close of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Older Americans Month, and the start of Brain and Alzheimer's Awareness month, it is import to recognize the cultural and systemic barriers to dementia identification and treatment in the AAPI community. On May 23rd, NAPCA, along with partners from NAAPIMHA and the Social Security Administration, provided information during an informational call on mental illness in the AAPI community and how Social Security can help. For information on strengthening community-based services for AAPI elders affected by dementia, please click here. NAPCA is dedicated to continuing to build and connect resources for this important issue in our AAPI communities.

ACL 2018 Older Americans Profile

The Administration for Community Living has released their 2018 Profile of Older Americans . This annual snapshot of critical statistics helps shape national policy based on data from the US Census Bureau. As we know, the population of Americans over 65 is growing and is projected to reach 94.7 million in 2060 - building on an increase of over 35% in the last ten years. Additionally, racial and ethnic minorities are a larger share of this population than ever, projected to reach 27.7 million by 2040 and account for 34% of older adults. On average 9.2% of older adults live below the poverty level, however 10.8% of AAPI older adults live below the poverty level.
