Dean A. Horn Award for Undergraduate Study in Marine Research

The MIT Sea Grant College Program is seeking nominations for the Dean A. Horn Award for Undergraduate Study in Marine Research . MIT undergraduates from any department are eligible.

An award of $1000 is presented yearly at the end of May to students with the most deserving marine-related projects. Awardees are selected for excellence in design and execution of research project, and clear communication of results in a well-written paper.


Recent awardees have majored in Mechanical Engineering:

  • Increasing Situational Awareness of Motorized Kayak Operators (Danielle Gleason)
  • Adding an Onboard Computer to the SeaPerch ROV (Jocelyn Lorrey)

Past awardees have hailed from non-engineering departments, from Biology to Physics:

  • Modal Decomposition of Internal Tides (Damon Vander Lind, Physics)
  • Analysis of the Growth and Sustenance of Ascidiella aspersa and Ciona intestinalis (Melissa Wu, Biology and Rubi Rajbanshi, Chemical Engineering)


Nomination of candidates is by letter from the student's faculty supervisor (students are encouraged to request a nomination) and must be accompanied by their research report.
