SECOND SUNDAY

Second Sunday is this week! United Methodist Men start the morning at 8:15am in the Palo Verde Room, this month they'll review survey results and begin developing a schedule and topics for the coming year. Check out our Sacred Space service at 8:50am in the Sanctuary. You’re invited to enjoy a cup of coffee or walk our Labyrinth at any time. Our traditional Sunday service is at 10:00 - we’ll be celebrating our graduates as well as Mother’s Day, then, plan to stay for either Faith Unplugged with Pastor Michael at 11:30 in the Fellowship Hall or Love Lessons with Dr. Gary Lovejoy at 11:15 in Room 112.

Second Sunday activities will pause during the summer and will return with a new set of small group offerings and worship opportunities this fall.

SNOW CONE SUNDAY

Snow cones are free this Sunday, so stop on by. We will be collecting donations for Project Hope, our clean water well project in Liberia. Annie and Prince Mayson are heading back to Liberia this summer to do some maintenance on four existing wells and to build some more clean water wells, so thanks in advance for your support!

PRISON MINISTRY COLLECTION

The Dayspring Prison Ministry team continues to reach out to women prisoners at Perryville Prison with a pen pal and birthday card program, and to mentor newly released women through the Bridges Reentry program of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield Park. A new opportunity to expand Bridges Reentry has arisen with the wonderful donation of a furnished house in Avondale.

Magdalene House No. 2 will open on May 1 to house six newly released women prisoners. Coupled with the first Magdalene House, this is a comprehensive healing residential program offering health services, addiction recovery, and employment training.

Dayspring is one of the only churches to supply basic household needs for the program. This Sunday, May 12, we will be collecting these items:

Paper goods (toilet paper, towels, napkins, tissues), Ziploc bags, trash bags, Cleaning supplies (for home and laundry) and household items (trash cans, toaster, coffee pot, broom, iron, ironing board, mops).

COMMON GROUND MOVIE

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) includes rebates and tax credits when you invest in household energy efficiency improvements. The SAGE team invites you to join one of our May Zoom meetings to learn about these household benefits:

Tues., May 14, 6:30–7:30pm

Thurs., May 16, 10:30–11:30am

To request the zoom link, email Maureen.

COMMON GROUND MOVIE

Join our Common Ground watch party on Friday, May 17, 6:30 - 8pm in the Dayspring Tempe Palo Verde Room. This new documentary profiles a hopeful, uplifting movement of farmers using "regenerative" models of agriculture that could balance the climate, save our health and stabilize America's economy - before it's too late.

BORDERLANDS PRODUCE RESCUE

Dayspring partners with Borderlands to bring unsold fresh produce from regional farms directly to our neighborhoods. We host a monthly event for the Arcadia neighborhood. Volunteers are needed to pack and distribute food boxes of approximately 70lbs. Our next event is Saturday, May 18 from 5-10am. If you’re interested in helping, please email Pastor Michael.

ELIJAH

Dayspring’s May 19 performance of Elijah brings together members of the Dayspring Celebration Chorale with singers from members of choirs from all around the valley for a true community experience. Baritone Nathan De'Shon Myers appears in the title role and the orchestra includes current and former ASU students and the Burn City String Quartet. Admission is by voluntary donation at the door. more

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

VBS is making a splash June 10–13 from 9:00 - noon. This year’s Scuba VBS will be full of the games, songs, activities, and snacks that you and your kids love. We’ll dive deep into an amazing undersea adventure where they’ll experience the ever-flowing, never-ending love of God. Children must be three years old (and MUST be potty trained) through entering 6th grade. Register online at dayspring-umc.org/vbs. Email Andrea with questions or to volunteer.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

While we're always in need of volunteers to help Sunday mornings run smoothly, Summer Sundays present a bigger than usual challenge to fill these roles, as so many people head out of town. When you know you're going to be at church, please consider signing up for one of the following positions - some take less than five minutes and all of them are fun... and important!

If you have questions or would be interested in helping out in any of the following areas, please reply to this email or email Andrea in the church office:

  • Shepherd (formerly called ushers, shepherds answer questions and help guide people)
  • Offering Volunteers (Help pass the plate following the pastor's message)
  • Worship Assistant (participate in service by reading the call to celebration, opening prayer, and scripture reading)
  • Summer Sunday School Leader (lead one of our weekly children's Sunday School classes)
  • Communion Server (help serve communion the first Sunday of the month)
  • Production Assistant (help our A/V team with the in-Sanctuary sound or our livestream)

Training will be provided for all volunteers. We're also in need of additional volunteers for Vacation Bible School (please see above) if you're available during the week! Please note: All volunteers working with our children must pass a background check.
