Exciting news! Gloucester Parks, Recreation & Tourism was recently awarded a $20,000 grant, which will help the Visit Gloucester Virginia brand reach a wider audience. The grant comes from the Virginia Tourism Corporation's Marketing Leverage Program and will allow the Tourism division to leverage its existing advertising budget to expand its reach.

May is Older Americans Month! Are you interested in learning more about the resources available to you and your neighbors?


Lisa Kersey, the director for Gloucester County's Department of Social Services, has been helping people from within the department for 25 years. In this podcast about Adult Services and Adult Protective Services, Kersey explains what safety nets are in place to help people who are struggling with a disability, food insecurity, housing problem or other need.

Every year since 1985, the first full week of May has been set aside as Public Service Recognition Week, a time to thank dedicated public servants from federal, state, and local governments across the country.



This week, and each day, we thank our dedicated Gloucester County Government employees for their tireless work that benefits our residents and visitors beyond measure.


The Gloucester Farmers Market returns Saturday, May 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Historic Ware Church (parking just past the Church at 7877 John Clayton Memorial Highway). It will be the second Saturday of the month, May through September. This month, they will have a free, outdoor yoga class at 10:00 a.m. and a community hymn sing in the Historic Church at 11:00 a.m. There are currently 54 vendor sites registered, with 90% of the vendors being local Gloucester small businesses or artisans.

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Tricks for Dogs on Sunday, May 21 from 2:00-3:00 pm at Beaverdam. The fee is $46 and the deadline is May 14.


PACK WALK

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Pack Walk for Dogs on Sunday, May 21 from 3:30-4:30 pm at Beaverdam. The fee is $46 and the deadline is May 14.


KARATE

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring is sponsoring Karate for ages 4 and older on Mondays and Thursdays at T. C. Walker from May 22-July 31 or May 25 – August 3. Four classes are offered for students of all levels, including a family class where adults and youth work together to learn. Fees are $35-$45 and the deadline to register is May 15 or May 18.


BINGO

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Bingo for ages 55 and over on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:30 am to noon at the Stewart Building. Winnings are prizes no cash. The fee is $10 and the deadline to register is May 21.


CHAIR FITNESS

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Chair Fitness on Thursdays in June from 9:30-10:30 am at the Stewart Building. Bring a mat, hand weights and water. The fee is $40 and the deadline to register is May 25.


CHAIR YOGA

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Chair Yoga on Thursdays in June 11:00-Noon at the Stewart Building. Bring a mat, blocks and water. The fee is $40 and the deadline to register is May 25.


KIDS FREE FISHING DAY AT BEAVERDAM

Parks, Recreation & Tourism and the Department of Wildlife Resources is sponsoring a Kids Free Fishing Day, for ages 5-15, at Beaverdam Park on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The weekend of June 3-4 are Free Fishing days in Virginia, and no fishing licenses are needed to fish on those days. A Conservation Police Officer will be on site to help and will bring fishing poles and bait for registered participants. An adult must accompany children. Registration is free but required in advance. The deadline to register is May 27.


BEAVERDAM KID’S FISHING TOURNAMENT

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring a Kid’s Fishing Tournament, for ages 5-15, on Sunday, June 4 from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. An adult must accompany all participants. There will be shore fishing and boat fishing divisions. All rental fees will apply. Age divisions will be determined by registration. The fee is $15 and the deadline to register is May 28.
