This Week in School and Campus Safety

Good morning,

This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to the National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, shares heat safety resources, and promotes an upcoming session of Preparing for the Unimaginable: An In-Depth Look at Wellness, Trauma Recovery, and Resilience.

Thank you for your interest in school and campus safety. However, if you wish to no longer receive our emails, let me know and I will remove you from our contacts list.

Respectfully,

Trevor Project's 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health

As we continue through Mental Health Awareness Month, another resource to consider reviewing is The Trevor Project’s 2021 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health. The report "provides brand new data on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health care disparities, discrimination, food insecurity, conversion therapy, and suicide — in addition to the benefits of LGBTQ-affirming spaces and respecting the pronouns of transgender and nonbinary youth."

Below are just a few of the statistics from the report:

  • "42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth."

  • "70% of LGBTQ youth stated that their mental health was “poor” most of the time or always during COVID-19."

  • "48% of LGBTQ youth reported they wanted counseling from a mental health professional but were unable to receive it in the past year."
Heat Safety Resources

While it may seem a bit early to be sharing heat safety resources, given the temperatures the last few days, it also seems appropriate. The Illinois School and Campus Safety Resource Center's Severe Weather page links to heat safety resources from several sources including the Red Cross, CDC, Ready Illinois, and the National Weather Service
