LA County Brush Clearance Deadline: June 1

All of Malibu is in a Very High Fire Hazard Zone. Our community has been tragically impacted by the Woolsey, Franklin and Palisades Fires, and the City and its partner agencies remain committed to minimizing fire-related risks.

Brush clearance is mandatory and can help Malibu be a more fire resistant and resilient community. Removing dry vegetation and debris around homes is one of the most effective ways to help protect lives and property, slow the spread of fires, and give firefighters a safer area to work. Avoid fines and protect your home — get free help from Malibu’s Fire Safety Liaisons on creating defensible space and home hardening!

Malibu's Fire Safety Liaisons offer free exterior property inspections to identify wildfire vulnerabilities. They’ll give you a free, no-obligation checklist of simple, often inexpensive ways to harden your home.

To schedule a Home Wildfire Assessment or get brush clearance advice from the City, call 310-456-2489, ext. 388 or email FireSafety@MalibuCity.org

On-Site Wastewater System Inspections in Burn Area

To protect public health and safety, each Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) located on a red-tagged property in the Palisades Fire burn area must be pumped and capped. Additionally, each OWTS is required to have risers and covers installed by a City-registered OWTS Practitioner no later than Monday, June 30, 2025.

Property owners are required to take the following actions:

  • Schedule an appointment with a City-registered OWTS Practitioner at MalibuCity.org/Practitioners
  • Provide a pumping ticket and photos of capped tank(s) to the City via emaileconsultant@malibucity.org
  • If the tank is destroyed/damaged, please visit the Building Safety Public Counter for permit issuance and next steps

For any questions regarding guideline requirements, contact econsultant@malibucity.org

Adjustments to this policy may be required by the Building Official on a case-by-case basis.
