Down at City Hall

My committee, Civil Service and Labor, had a vote on Resolution 0026 by Council Member Aviles that would establish May annually as Labor History Month in New York City public schools. Young people will have the opportunity to learn about labor history and be empowered by the lessons of collective activism that secured our hard-earned rights and protection in the work force.

Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection:

I voted aye on Int 847 by Council Member Ung, requiring the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to establish and implement an outreach and education program to create awareness of common scams targeting and impacting tourists.

Committee on Mental Health and Substance Use:

I voted aye on Int 741 by Council Member Lee, that would establish a task force on NYC 988 and amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to a public education campaign and reporting on NYC 988

Little Yemen

On Thursday, May 15th I introduced Resolution 458 calling on the New York State Legislature to pass, and the Governor to sign, S.6487C/A.7033D, to empower the New York State Council on the Arts to designate Little Yemen as a cultural district.

"The area known as Little Yemen represents the established and growing Yemeni community and business district situated in the East Bronx neighborhoods of Morris Park and Van Nest in Council District 13. I am proud to represent this vibrant neighborhood and bring Resolution 458 to the floor today in support of the legislation introduced by my colleagues Assembly Member John Zaccaro and Senator Nathalia Fernandez at the State level.

Little Yemen reflects the Yemeni community’s heritage and traditions, and is filled with Yemeni-owned businesses — including restaurants, food stores, and clothing shops — as well as mosques and cultural centers that promote community activity. Designating Little Yemen as a cultural district would recognize the community’s unique cultural identity, foster pride in its contributions among its residents, and honor the diversity it brings to the Bronx and to New York City as a whole."

District Spotlight

I was honored to attended the 49th and 45th Precinct Community Council breakfast meeting where I had the opportunity to talk to our police officers, local stakeholders, and constituents. Thank you to our police officers for always looking out for our community and keeping our streets safe. Thank you to the 49th and 45th Precinct Community Council leadership for putting this wonderful event together!
